Suggest Grant
At Local Level
(by Shirley J. Keller)
By a show of hands at the
March session of Huron County
Council, members showed they
preferred to use the $50, 000
available to the county through
the provincial -municipal empl-
oyment incentive program at the
local level.
One dollar for every resident
in Huron County is available up-
on successful application to the
Minister of Municipal Affairs to
be used to hire unemployed per-
sons or individuals on welfare
who are able to work.
If the county government
wished, it could have claimed
the money and conducted a
county -wide program. However,
councillors were in agreement
that the money could be spent
more advantageously at the
municipal level and each mun-
icipality may now adopt its own
plan for the use of the money.
The applications must be
made by the end of this month.
The program ends at June 30.

(heck Orchards
In Spring For
Mice Damage
As the spring thaws begins, it
is time to check apple and pear
orchards for mice damage. Mice
often feed on tree bark, at about
ground level, under cover of
winter snow, and can work right
down to the main roots or gnaw
all tree bark off if the snow is
deep enough.
Professor C.B. Kelly, Depart-
ment of Botany, University of
Guelph, says first aid should be
applied immediately to damaged
trees. Wounds should be covered
with a tree dressing such as
Braco, and extra poisoned bait
should be applied to prevent
further damage.
Girdled trees can be saved by
bridge grafting or inarching.
Professor Kelly suggests that
growers consult Ontario Depart-
ment of Agriculture and Food
Publication 439, Orchard Graft-
ing, for details on these techn-
iques. Scions for bridge grafting
and one-year whips for inarching
should be secured while they are
still dormant, and stored for
future use.
While meadow mice usually
concentrate on pear and apple
trees, they may also attack
others. Young trees, says Prof-
essor Kelly, are a favorite target
but if they are hungry enough
mice will attack old trees with
tough, thick bark.
