Although Zurich were not playing to the best of their ab- ility they were able to fight 6ff their tough opponents and came up with the first victory. Gerald Weido put Zurich in frorr by one goal when he scored an unassisted play at the 16:42 mark of the first period. At the 5:50 mark of the sec- ond period Pat Bedard and Harry Smits combined their efforts to put Zurich in front 2-0. Near the midway mark of the period Randy Lenas scored his first of two goals to put Lion's Head on the scoreboard and narrow the margin to 2-1. With one min- ute remaining in the second period Lenas scored his second goal to tie the game at 2-2 after two periods of close, tough hockey. Pat Bedard came up with a lone effort at the 5:50 mark of the final period to score what proved to be the winning goal. Derek O'Brien scored the ins- urance goal at the midway mark of the period and Zurich were able to hold off their competit- ors from tying or winning the game. The next game of the series will be played Saturday night in the Zurich Arena at '7:30 p.rr This could be the final game and could give Zurich the W . O- AA, championship, so fans are urged to attend this game and cheer the boys to victory. If a third game should be nec- essary it will be played in Hanover with the dare to be decided later CLINTON TOURNAMENT The Zurich Bantams are cur- rently taking part in a Bantam Tournament being held in Clint- on and have taken two easy victories this far. Last Saturday morning they downed Alvinston 6-2 and Sunday afternoon they thumped Sarnia Indians 10-2. The next game in the tournament will be played Thursday night at '7:00 p.m. against Ilderton. The winner will play the champ- ionship game at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday night. ZURICH 6 - ALVINSTON 2 Last Saturday morning the Bantams played the first game of the tournament and downed Alvinston 6-2. Gerald Weido opened the scor- ing in the first period scoring on a play from Pat and Bill Bedard. Weido gave Zurich a 2-0 lead before the first period ended. Pat Bedard scored on a play from Gerald Weido in the sec- ond period to give Zurich a 3-0 lead before Alvinston carne back with a goal to put them on the scoreboard. Zurich carne back strong in the third period to outscore their opponents 3-1. Alvinston scored their second goal in the third period to narrow the margin to 3-2, before Zurich carne back with three big goals. 1 -tarry Smits Barry 1 -less and Brad Oke scored the third period goals for Zurich to insure them of their victory. ZURICH 10 - SARNIA INDIANS 2 The Bantams returned to Clint- on on Sunday afternoon and came up with a convincing 10-2 victory over the Sarnia Indian Reserve. Two goals by harry Smits in the first period gave Zurich a 2-0 lead. Sarnia then carne back with their first goal to make the score 2-1. Before the period ended David Schilbe scored for Zurich to give them a 3-1 lead. Zurich came up with three more big goals in the second period holding Sarnia to no goals Brad Oke, 'Larry Smits and Gerald Weido were second per- iod goal scorers , which gave Zur ich a 6-1 lead. Harry Smits scored for Zurich to put thein in front 7-1 before Sarnia came back with their second and last goal to make it 7-2. Before the game ended Gerald Weido came up with two more goals and 13111 Bedard with a single to give Zurich their 10-2 victory. 0 MIDGETS LOSE TO HENSALL On Monday night the Zurich Midgets played a four point game in order to finish the schedule and were edged out 3-1 by 1 Iensall. Randy Campbell opened the scoring at the 3:00 mark of the first period to give L lensall a 1-0 lead which they held for the remainder of the period. At the 11:55 mark of the sec- ond period a goal by Danny Schilbe tied the game at 1-1. Cord Pryde put ilensall in front at the 7:00 minute marl< of the final period, Another goal by Pryde before the period ended gave Iiensall their 3-1 victory. HENSALL 7 - FARMER'S U, 0 Last Thursday night the Ilen- sall Generals won their first game of the playoffs as they shut -out the Farmer's Union '7-0, Jim Campbell scored the only goal of the first period to give them a slight 1-0 lead. Hensall then carne up with four big goals to give them a 5-0 lead. Charles Dalrymple scored twice and singles went to Rick Parker and Charles Schwalm. Two goals by Rick Parker and Murray Bell gave llensall their 7-0 shut -out victory. BLUEWATER 7 - SABRES 4 In the second Rec League game on Thursday night the Blue Water came up with a 7-4 victory over the Sabres. Although the Sabres tool< a demanding 4-1 lead at the end of the first period things fell apart and they were unable to come up with a victory. Larry Denomme scored three big goals and a single went to Aub- rey Bedard which gave thein a 4-0 lead, Phil Overholt scored the only Blue Water goal of the first period. There was no scoring in the second period and in the final period i3luewater boys came up with six big goals to give them their victory. Jim Bedard and Phil Overholt came up with three big goals each which gave them a 7-4 victory. FLYERS 7 - MATES 2 On Friday night rhe Flyers earned two points in the play- offs as they downed rhe Mates 7-2. The Flyers tool< a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Richard Fisher and George Suplat The two teants played to a 2-2 tie in the second period which still left the Flyers in front 4-2. Richard Thiel scored two goals for the Flyers. Eric Smale and Larry Hess scored the only two goals for the Mates. Two goals by George Suplat and one by Cord Hay gave the Flyers their 7-2 victory. 0 Zurich Pee ,t` + ee s in One; Lose ne During the past week the Zurich Pee Wees played a hone and home exhibition series against Blyth winning one and losing one, ZURICH 4 - BLYTH 2 Last Friday night the Zurich Pee Wees travelled to Blyth to play the first of two exhibition games and came out on top 4-2. The teams played to a score- less tie in the first period with each team missing several good chances. Billy Hay shot Zurich into a 1-0 lead scoring on an unassist- ed play. Midway through the period Fred Mommersteeg scored on a play from Wayne Schilbe to give them a 2-0 lead at the end of two periods, Two goals by Fred Momrner- steeg early in the final period gave Zurich a 4-0 lead. Another goal by David Rodger narrowed Zurich's lead to 4-2 but Blyth was unable to come up with the winning goals. BLYTH 3 - ZURICH 2 On Monday night Blyth ret- urned the visit and played a very close game in which they edged out Zurich 3-2. Again rhe teams played to a scoreless tie in the first period, At the 12:55 mark of the sec- ond period an unassisted goal by Fred Mommersteeg gave Zurich a 1-0 lead which was the only scoring of the second period. Blaine Johnston scored at the 2:00 minute mark of the final period to tie the game at 1-1. Near the mid -way mark of the period Brad Bromley scored the go-ahead goal for Blyth. At the 13:10 mark Keith Howatt scored an unassisted goal to put Blyth in front 3-1. Thirty seconds after receiving a pen- alty Zurich cane back with a goal by Jeff O'Brien to make it 3-2.
