This is a twinning program between two schools in the Carribean and Ontario, endorsed by the Department of Education, --At present Zurich Public School is twinned with Fond Assau Infant School, Fond Assau, Parish of Babonneau, St. Lucia, West Indies. It is be- coming increasingly important that young people have a know- ledge of the customs and ways of other people. Soudents est- ablish friendships by exchange of letters, photographs, and personal momentos. Essay projects, art -work, maps, test papers can be exchanged on the classroom level. In a recent issue of "The Link' a newspaper produced by the Ontario Department of Educat- ion, students were asked to complete a story. The first paragraph has been reprinted below, and the completed stories by the students follow: "The forest was dark and eerie. Strange sounds surrounded me and I could feel shivers run- ning up and down my spine. I kept thinking of what the little old man had told me. This was an enchanted forest and anyone who intered it had never been seen again. Even the trees seemed to watch me as I stumbl- ed along. I stopped for a morn- ent to catch my breath. Then I saw it, .. . THE ANIMAL --- It was small, like a dog. Its body was like a turtle's shell only it had points all over like a dragon. The neck as long as a giraffe's and just as spotted. The head, oh so tint, was open- ed wide, showing a long purple tongue. The teeth were crooked and full of cavities. Its hair was long, kind of purplish or- ange, and the "what -ever -it - was" was standing right beside my berries I had come to get. Suddenly, in robot voice, it 'called out to me. "I am an animal, I like to eat all kinds of things. E -spec- ially- people." "Who -o -o are you?" I stam- mered. "I told you. Come -over -here little -girl. " "I -I -I won't." "Then -I-shall. " The animal sprang, licking his lips wickedly. At the same time I began running as I'd never ran before. Out of the bewitched forest I ran, past the little man that had moved one hundred feet away. When I reported this to the police, they looked and said, "We don't believe stories like that. Go away." I went to bed and looked out the window. THE ANIMAL. As I ducked under the covers, I thought, "I better watch out, " You'd better too. Especially in the enchanted forests. Carol Rader Grade 5 Zurich Public School A CHANGE OF EVENTS Before me was a shabby old hut deep in the heart of the en- chanted forest. How the hut was standing on two gigantic chick- en legs was beyond me. The chimney was an old tomato juice can. A shabby old door rocked and squeaked on its hinges. Some of the windows were broken and some were cracked. What would I do next? Suddenly a little old woman came out of the door, She walk- ed down the steps. I scrambled to safety but she had good ears for she heard me. She called to me saying, "Come here child, I won't hurt you„" Struck with terror I walked to her. She was as good as her word and didn't touch me. In- stead she began telling my why the children did not come back from the enchanted forest. I found that she had the children in her house and was caring for them like her own children. Just as I turned to go home I heard a rumbling noise. Quickly turning I nearly fainted. The sweet little old lady had chang- ed into a wicked old witch. As I started to scream, she waved l her want. Suddenly I was sur- rounded by snarling dogs. I knew that if I moved I would be pounced upon and conseq- uently torn to pieces. Thinking rapidly I thought of a plan. Turning quickly I pointed my finger shouting, "Look at that rabbit go." The dogs raced in the direct- ion of my finger. The witch had COMPETITION WINNERS - Two students at the Zurich Public School, Carol Rader, left, and Karen McAllister, right, were among the top students in Ontario competing in a contest to finish a story, conducted by "The Link" a newspaper publish- ed by the special projects branch of the Department of Education. to go after them. Chuckling at my joke, I turned and ran out of the enchanted forest.
