HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1971-02-11, Page 12PAGE TWELVE ZURICH CITIZENS NEW Hensall-Zurich Finish Season Last Sunday afternoon the Hensall-Zurich Co -Ops played their last game of the season and came up with an impressive 7-7 tie with Mitchell. The Co -Ops came back from a 5-1 setback and managed to play to a tie game. The game was only 21 sec- onds old when Bob Garnochan scored to put Mitchell in front 1-0. About a minute later John McKinley scored his first of three goals to tie the game at 1-1. At the 19:40 mark Paul Pat- rick scored to put Mitchell ahead by one goal again. By the midway mark of the second period Mitchell had scored three times on plays by Jerrie Hoekstra, with one goal and Don Heslop with two. This gave Mitchell their 5-1 lead. A goal each by Jim Ranier and Ron Desjardine put the Co - Ops back in the game and ended the second period at 5-3. John McKinley scored his second goal of the game at the 6:44 mark to narrow Mit- chell's lead to one goal. How- ever, Glen Nickolson came back with a goal for the visitors to give them another two goal lead. The Co -Ops then carne back with two goals by John McKinley and Bill Hoy to tie the game at 6-6. At the 14 min- ute mark, Glen Nickolson scor- ed the final Mitchell goal to put them in front 7-6. The tying goal for the Co -Ops came at the 18:34 mark when Brian Camp- bell scored from Shane McKin- non and John McKinley. There were 11 penalties cal- led with the Co -Ops being pen- alized only once and Mitchell 10 times. BELMONT 7 - ZURICH - 1 Last Saturday the Hensall- Zurich Co -Ops travelled to Belmont and played a close game but fell apart in the last Zurich Peewees Win First Game of Group Playoffs Against Grand Gend On Sunday afternoon the Zurich Pee Wees won their first game of the play-off group champs when they clowned Grand Bend by a slim 1-0 shut -out. Zurich playing without regular goalie Randy Oke, backed up Rick Bedard who substituted in the net and well earned his vict- ory. Zurich's lone goal cane at the 14:50 mark of the second period when Wayne Clarke scor- ed on a passing play from Paul Robinson. The second game of the ser- ies was played last night (Wed- nesday) and should Zurich have won, they would advance on into the playoff finals for the W,O,A,A, championship. Should Grand Bend have won,a third game will be played to decide the winners. Last Wednesday night the Zurich Pee Wees won their first set of play-offs as they downed Adastral Park 17-1. The win for Zurich gave them the right to play Grand Bend in their second play-off series. Zurich took a 3-0 lead in the first period. At the 14:05 mark . Wayne Clarke opened the scoring and half a minute later Fred Mommersteeg scored again to push then ahead 2-0. Jeff O'- Brien finalized the first period scoring at the 18:05 mark. Zurich increased their lead to 5-0 by the end of the second stanza. Goal scorers for Zurich were Fred Mommersteeg and Jeff O'Brien. In the final period Zurich never gave up as they came on to outscore their opponents 12-1. By the midway mark Zurich scored four times to put them in front 9-0. After the 14:00 minute mark, Zurich scored eight more goals. Goal scorers in the final period were Wayne Clarke with a hat trick, Paul Robinson and Fred Mommersteeg adding two each, while singles went to Billy Flay, Jeff O'Brien, Doug Eckel, Wayne Schilbe, Steven Smith, and Danny La- porte. The lone Adastral Park goal came with only 5 seconds remaining in the game to ruin a shut- out for Zurich goalie Randy Oke. There were seven penalties called in the game with Zur- ich being penalized five times and Adastral Park twice. Each team came up with one goal in the first period. At the 13:73 mark Don MacPherson put Belmont on the score -board, Minutes later Brian Campbell came up with what proved to be the Co-Op's only goal scoring on a play from John Corriveau and Randy Decker. The only scoring of the sec- ond period came at the 6:45 mark when Ed Landon broke the tie and put Belmont in front 2-1. The Co -Ops were unable to come up with the tieing goal. At the 8:09 mark of the final period Belmont jumped into a 3-1 lead on a goal by Ed Land- on. Two goals by John Willsie and one by Doug Stromes within 30 seconds proved to be the winning goals for Belmont. The other single goal was added by Brian Abbey. 0 Bantams Win Title Last Wednesday night the Zurich Bantams won their group championship as they trounced Adastral Park 16-0, to take the series two games to none. The win gives Zurich the right to move on to the W,O,A,A, playdowns. Zurich will play the winners of a series between Blyth, Brussels, Ripley and Moncton. After taking only a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period, Zur- ich came back strong and went on to win the game with no trouble. The first period goal for Zurich was scored by Harry Snits. In the second period Zurich went on a scoring spree as they tallied up 10 goals. Gerald Weido and Harry Smits scored three times, followed closely by Brad Oke, who added two more. Singles went to Derek O'Brien and Bill Webster. Third period goal scorers were harry Smits with two and Brad Oke, Gerald Weido and Ken Regier scoring singles. Four Goals by Don O'Brien Sparks Bluewater to Victory In Rec League BLUEWATER 6 - MATES 2 Last Sunday night the Blue- water downed the Mates 6-2 in Rec League action. Barry Bloch opened the scoriri for the Bluewater in the first period. With only one second remaining in the period. Larry Hess scored on a lone attempt to tie the game for the Mates. Two goals by Don O'Brien within 30 seconds pushed the Bluewater into a 3-1 lead. Another single by O'Brien and one by Jim Bedard gave the Bluewater a convincing 5-1 lead at the end of two periods. The final period saw Don O'Brien score goal number six before the Mates came back with their second goal. Paul Bedard was the marksman for the Mates. FARMERS U, 10- FLYERS 3 Last Thursday night in other Rec League play the Farrner's Union trounced the Flyers 10-3. The only two goals of the first period came at the six and 14 minute mark on two goals by Gerald Shantz to put the Farmer's Union in front by two goals. The teams played to a 3-3 tie in the second period. John Gascho, Larry Merrier and Ray Weido were goal scorers for the Farmer's Union. George Suplat scored twice for the Flyers and Gord Hay added the single in the only scoring for the Flyers. The Farmer's Union came on to score five more goals in the final period. Gerald Shantz and Pete Bedard scored two goals each while Larry Merrier added the single marker . HENSALL 7 - SABRES 3 In the other game last Thurs- day the Hensall Generals down- ed the Sabres 7-3. The two teams played to a 3-3 tie in the first period. The Sabres took a 3-0 lead on goals by Ken Clarke, Mike Russel and Larry Denomrne. Three goals , one by Jim Campbell, Charles Schwalm and Dewy Wurm tied the game for Hensall for the first period. There was no scoring in the second period, but Hensall cane on to score four goals in the final period to give then their victory.
