50 Years Ago
Ed Beaver, of the village, and
Henry Brown, of the 14th conces-
sion, are attending the sitting of
the Huron County Court in God-
erich this week.
Mr. Jacob Oesch, of the Gosh-
en north, who has recently under-
gone an operation in a London
Hospital, returned to his home
and is improving nicely.
Kitchener won the second game
of the home and home series with
the Exeter -Zurich combines by a
score of 6-2 in Exeter last Friday
night, Babe Siebert and Robinson
were the best players on the ice
for the combined team.
Harold Kellerman, of Dashwood
has a record which is hard to beat,
for a flock of laying hens. During
January, from 11 hens he gathered
165 eggs from the flock. During
14 days in February he gathered
100 eggs.
A bus load of young people
from Dashwood took in the skat-
ing at Zurich on Saturday night.
Two flocks of wild ducks were
seen flying north at Bayfield last
week.
Robert Boal, a teacher with
muck experience and highly rec-
ommended had acccepted the
position as principal of the Zur-
ich Public School, but on learn-
ing that the other teacher resign-
ed on account of the salary quest-
ion, he also asked to be relieved
from the position.
40 Years Ago
Mr. Fred Datars of Hensall
was in town this week, arranging
for the funeral of his departed
mother, the late Mrs, F. Datars.
Fines of $50 each were imposed
by Magistrate Reid in court at
Wingham on charges of having
home brew without permits to
manufacture.
Payments on Old Age Pension
in Canada last year amounted
approximately to $11, 000, 000 of
which the Dominion Government
paid half.
Warning is given by the press
that fake eye specialists are again
touring the country. The sad part
of it is that aged people are us-
ually the victims.

The old cow bell was again
ringing on Thursday evening of
last week, when the fourteenth
sleigh load party went to William
Decker's near Zurich and cert-
ainly were well entertained.

Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Mack
have taken up residence in a few
rooms in the home of Mrs. E.
Hay.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Thiel
have purchased the business of
Mr. J. W. Merrier in Zurich, and
will soon be taking over as oper-
ators of the general store. They
have also purchased the business
formerly known as the Zurich
Drug Store.
Mr. Howard Klnmp spent a few
days in Toronto last week, where
he received his discharge from
the Air Force. He also accepted
a position with the Dashwood
Planing Mills.
Laurence Stephenson has sold
his general store in Bayfield to
Ernest Hovey, of Clinton who
will take possession on April 1.
George Denorny, a well-known
farmer of the Drysdale district,
passed away at his residence on
Saturday, after an illness of only
two days.
Arthur Finkbeiner was elected
president of the Hay Farmer's
Mutual Fire Insurance Company,
at the 71st annual meeting of the
company.
Mrs. Ross Johnston and baby
daughter arrived home from the
Seaforth Hospital.
15 Years Ago
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Erb of
the Parr Line, Hay Township
received a big surprise when one
of their Holstein cows presented
them with a set of twin calves,
the third set of twin calves in
three years.
Dr. Gerald St. Pierre closed
his office in Zurich the beginning
of February and the Doctor and
his family have moved to Wind-
sor.

The weather this week has been
a bit catchy, with thaws linger-
ing around the corner. Thursday
of last week was ground hog day
and as the sky was heavily over-
cast all day, the creature if he
did come out, was unable to see
his shadow.

In the first game of the WOAA
Bantam "D" play -downs, Hensall
defeated Zurich 4-0, in a game
played at the Ilensall arena last
Wednesday evening'. Scoring for
the Hensall team were Danny
Cameron, David Smale, Bob
Carlile and Bob Cooper.

ation program for the mentally

Carnival held in the local arena.
Tentative plans for the 100th
Centennial Anniversary of St.
Peter's Lutheran Church were
made at a meeting of the com-
mittee in charge, last Wednesday
evening.

executive producer of CBC -TV's
long-running (nine seasons),
multi -award-winning Nature of
Things series will be at the
helm of The Living Arctic, the
second of two CBC White
Paper documentaries to be
telecast this season. The two-
hour color production, filmed
throughout Canada's vast nor-
thern regions, will focus on the
virgin arctic and its magnifi-
cent flora and fauna, and the
exploited arctic after the ar-
rival of the white man. It will
be telecast on the CBC net-
work the evening of Wednesr
day, March 3.
Separate School
Board Approves
Use of Facilities

Separate schools may be us-
ed for social functions as well
as meetings by parish councils,
Catholic Women's League,
Catholic Youth Organizations
and similar groups without a
fee was the decision reached
by the Huron -Perth County
Roman Catholic Separate
School Board when an amend-
ment was made to the by-law
covering the use of schools.
In other business at the meet-
ing held in Seaforth Monday
night the board approved cont-
inuing the honorarium of $30
per month to Harold Ducharme
of Stratford who had been an
employee with the previous
board in Stratford for over 20
years.
The following delegates will
attend the annual convention
of the Ontario Separate School
Trustees Association in Toronto
March 31 to April 1 and 2:
Superintendents of Education,
John Vintar and Joseph Tokar;
Business administrator, Jack
Lane; and Trustees: Howard
Shantz, Jaynes Morris, David
Teahen, and F, J. Vere, all
of Stratford, Vincent Young,
of Goderich, Francis Bicknell,
R. R. 5, Seaforth, and Oscar
Kieffer of R, R,1, Bluevale.
A rider is to be added to the
contract of Tony Denomme of
Zurich that he be paid at the
rate of $2.50 per hour for '
extra curricular transportation
as approved by the administ-
ration or by the principal.
A letter from the Ontario
Department of Education was
received by Mr. Vintar inform-
ing him it will grant recognit-
ion to teachers for courses in
religious education conducted
by the Ontario Separate School
Trustees Association and the
Ontario English Catholic Teach-
er's Association.
