The opening goal of the game came at the 11:00 marl< of the first period when Steve Grainger scored to shoot Zurich into a 1-0 lead. Before the first period end- ed Wayne Thiel scored a goal fron Paul Haggitt to give Zurich a 2-0 lead. In the second period each team came up with one goal. Grant Love scored for Zurich to give them a 3-0 lead before Grand Bend came back with a goal by Jim Veneer, to end the second period at 3-1. Again in the final period each team scored once. Steven Over- holt shot Zurich into a 4-1 lead at the 11:25 mark before Grand Bend scored their final goal. Jim Veneer scored the final goal at the 13:50 mark. BELGRAVE 7 - ZURICH 1 In the second game of the day the Zurich PeeWee's came up against a strong team from 13e1 - grave and were downed 7-1. Belgrave took a 3-0 lead in the first period. Kevin Carter scored the opening goal for Belgrave followed by goals from Doug Shell and Don Carter. In the second period Belgrave scored three more goals to In- crease their lead to 6-0. Goal scorers for the winners were Don Carter, Jim McKee and Greg Cook, The final period saw each team come up with one goal. Belgrave took a 7-0 lead on a goal by Doug Shell. Zurich's lone goal was scored by Fred Mommersteeg at the midway mark of the final period. SWIM OAKRIDGE ACRES 5 -ZURICH 7 In the most exciting event of the afternoon the Zurich Bantams played host to the Oakridge Acres "13" team from London. After playing a very close game, Zuricl carne up with a 7-5 victory. Zurich took the lead at the 7:15 marl< of the first period on a goal by Ilarry Smits. At the 15:20 mark Gerald Weido gave Zurich a 2-0 lead. However, before the period ended Tom Jacob put Oak- ridge Acres on the score -sheet, Things turned around in the middle stanza as Oakridge out- scored Zurich 2-1. Doug.,,Gleed scored twice for the visitors to give them a 3-2 lead before Ger- ald Weido came back to make the score 3-3 at the end of two periods. In the final period Blake Hud- son broke the tie when the period was only 30 seconds old. Minutes later Harry Smits came up with a solo effort to tie the game at 4-4. Three more goals by /tarry Smits, Pat Bedard and Barry 1Jess before the 15:00 minute marl< proved to be the winning goals for Zurich. The last goal calve at the 19:16 marl< when Joe henry scored on a lone effort for Oak- ridge Acres. MITES 0 - GIRLS 0 In the only scoreless game of the afternoon the Zurich Mites and the Zurich Girls played to a 0. 0 tie. HURON PARK 3 - ZURICH 11 The last game of the Zurich Minor Hockey Day last week saw the Zurich Midgets trounce Huron Park, 11-3. Pete Hesse scored the opening goal when the game was less than two minutes old, By the 3:32 mark Zurich had jumped into a 3-0 lead on two more goals by Rick Grenier and Joe Kenda. Be ore the period ended Gerald ,YNeido scored two goals and Ri < Grenier one, to give Zurich/a convincing lead. Two goals by Rick Funston and Mike Flinn narrowed the gap to 6-3 by the midway mark of the second period. Three single goals by Robert Finkbeiner, Ron Rader and Pete Nesse gave Zurich a 9-3 lead at the end of two per- iods. Single goals by Gerald Weido and Dopg Turkheim in the final stanza gave the Midgets their 11-3 victory, n Set New Date Inclement weather forced post ponement of the annual meeting of the Zurich Agricultural Soc- iety, which had been planned for last Wednesday, January 27. The new date for the annual meeting has been set for this Saturday .afternoon, February 6, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Hay Township Hall, Zurich. Everyone is urged to attend this annual meeting, and show an interest in the future of the Zurich Fall Fair. Only by cont- inued co-operation will the event be able to carry on. Bantams Lose (by Doug Turkheim) Last Friday night the Zurich Bantams travelled to Port Huron to to begin competition in the North American Championship, but were edged out in the first game as Caledonia downed them 3-1. The Caledonia team had been previous year All Ontario "B" Champs and their Pee Wee's were runners up. Although Zuricl outshot their opponents 22-12, they were unable to come up with the winning goals. The opening goal came at the 1:22 mark of the first period when Pat Bedard scored Zurich's THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1971 lone goal to put diem in front 1-0, This lead was held until the 6:09 mark of the second period when Caledonia scored on a man -advantage effort to tie the game. At the 13:36 mark of the same period Caledonia again scored with a man advant- age to give them a 2-1 lead, About a minute later Caledonia scored again to end the scoring in the second period. In the final period the teanis played to a scoreless tie, with Zurich missing many chances to tie and win the game.
