Zurich Bantams Win Silver Stick
(by Doug Turkheim)
During the past week of hock-
ey the Zurich Bantams kept on
their good showing and won the
"C and D" Bantam title in the
Watford Silver Stick Tourna-
ment, and earned the right to
move into the North American
Championship playdowns being
held in Port Huron. The Bant-
ams will play against Caledonia
on Friday, January 29, at 10:15
p. m. They have planned to
charter two buses and any -one
wishing to go along should cont-
act Gord Hay at the Zurich
Arena or Glen Weido. The bus
tickets will be $2. 50 each. The
bus will return home the same
night..
ZURICH 2- WILTON GROVE 1
In the final game of the
tournament the Zurich Bantams
played an exciting game which
went into two periods of over-
time before Gerald Weido
came up with the goal that mov-
ed them into the North Amer-
ican Championship. Zurich
downed Wilton Grove 2-1 in
the second overtime period.
There was no scoring in the
first period as each team play-
ed a strong game of hockey and
neither team could seem to
come up with an opening goal.
Wilton Grove scored the only
goal of the second period to
take a 1-0 lead. Although Zur-
ich had many chances at the net,
they couldn't seem to capital-
ize to tie the game.
At the 8:00 mark of the final
period Gerald Weido scored on
an unassisted play to put his
team right back in the game.
Neither team was able to score
the tie-breaker before the
period ended, and so the over-
time periods started.
After playing through one 10 -
minute overtime period Gerald
Weido capitalized on a scoring
play from Harry Smits at the
4:13 mark of the second period.
At one point Zurich had to kill
off penalties for Gerald Weido,
Pat and. Bill Bedard, which was
thought to be the critical point
of the game.
Wilton Grove had previously
been the top team in the "C"
division and were challenged
by Zurich ,"D" winners.
ZURICH 10 - GLENCOE 5
In the second game last Sat-
urday the Zurich Bantams kept
their hopes up as they came up
with a convincing 10-5 victory
over Glencoe, to win the "D"
title.
Bill Webster opened the scor-
ing early in the first period,
scoring on an unassisted goal
at the .41 second mark. Marc
Gelinas pushed Zurich into a
2-0 lead before James Sor'ld, of
Glencoe put them on the score
sheet. Pat Bedard put Zurich
in front 3-1 before Gerald Weido
came up with an unanswered
goal to give them a 4-1 lead.
The second period saw Zurich
slacken off and Glencoe carne
back and outscored them 4-1, to
tie the game at 5-5. Jim Dy -
mock and Gary Howe each scor-
ed twice for Glencoe to put
them back into the game. Ger-
ald Weido tied the game before
the period ended scoring on a
play from Pat Bedard.
Zurich came out flying in the
final stanza, and when the per-
iod was only 14 second old, Bill
Bedard scored what proved to
be the winning goal. Before
the midway mark of the period
Zurich led 9-5 with goals by
Gerald Weido, Harry Smits and
Pat Bedard. With two minutes
remaining, Gerald Weido scor-
ed to end it at 10-5.

Saturday, the Zurich Bantams

putting them in front 1-0.
Harry Smits scored on a play
from Pat Bedard to tie the game

which put them in front. How-

The only scoring of the first
period came at the 9:25 mark

into a 1-0 lead. Each team mis-
sed several other chances but
couldn't seem to come up with
any more scoring plays.
Shane McKinnon capitalized
on a scoring play from Ron Cor-
riveau and Rod Chapman when
the second period was only 30
seconds old. Exeter took a 2-1
lead midway through the period
when Pete Grover scored his
second goal. At the 17:23 marl
Brian Campbell tied the score
at two goals each. With 30
seconds left in the period, John
McKinley shot the Co -Ops into
a 3-2 lead, to end the middle
stanza.

and Mike Hoy were the Hawk
scorers to give them the lead.

Campbell scored his second
goal to tie the game for the
