Zurich Citizens News, 1971-01-14, Page 16PAGE SIXTEEN ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS THURSDAY, JANUARY 14, 1971 Zurich Bantams In Tournament (by Doug Turkheim) The Zurich Bantams are cur- rently taking part in the "Silver Stick Tournament" being held in Watford, and to date they have won both games which they have played. Last week they downed the Sarnia Reserve 8-1 and this past Sunday they downed Ilderton 9-3. ZURICH 8 - SARNIA R. 1 In the first game of the tourn- ament the Zurich team faired well ao they came up witil a convincing 8-1 victory over the Sarnia Reserve. Harry Smits opened the scor- ing in the first period followed by a goal from Gerald Weido. Before the period ended Harry Smots and Pat Bedard each scored another goal to give them a 4-0 lead. Things were fairly even in the middle stanza as each team scored one goal. Richard Mom- ersteeg scored the Zurich goal to give Zurich a 5-1 lead. Gerald Weido scored the first of three goals in the final stan- za. Harry Srnits added two more goals before the period ended to give them an insuring 8-1 victory. ZURICH 9 - ILDERTON 3 Last Sunday afternoon Zur- ich won their second game of the tournament as they downed Ilderton 9-3. Bill Bedard opened the scor- ing in the first period with a goal at the 3:34 mark. Gerald Weido scored the only other goal of the period to give Zurich a slim 2-0 lead. Zurich was strong in the second pericd to outscore their opponents, 3-1. Pat Bedard scored for Zurich before Ilder- ton carne back with a goal. Harry Smits and Brad Oke scored two more goals for Zurich to put them in frort 5-1. In the final period Zurich went on and outscored Ilderton 5-2. Harry Smits scored two goals for Zurich before Ilderton carne back with two goals, to make the score 7-3. Before the period ended Pat Bedard and Bill Webster scored to give Zurich their 9-3 victory. There were fifteen penalties called with Zurich drawing seven and Ilderton eight. Zurich will return to Watford next Saturday morning, January 16, to play Lucan at 7 a.m. Should they win this game they will play the winner of a game between Glencoe and Shedden. This game will be played at 1:45 p.m. and will decide the winner of the "D" Champion- ship. ZURICH 6- HURON PARK 3 Last Saturday morning Zurich Bantams travelled to Huron Park and carne the closest to losing a game, as they downed Huron Park 6-3. The first period ended -in a 2-2 tie. Bill Bedard opened the scoring only to see Joe Reg- ier of Huron Park tie the game. Gerald Weido scored the sec- ond goal for Zurich but again Huron Park tied the game with a goal by Rob Stock. Gerald Weido opened the scoring in the second period at the 1:05 mark, Minutes later Dan Regier tied the game for Huron Park. Gerald Weido gave Zurich a 4-3 lead before the third period started. In the final period Zurich scored twice to give them the 6-3 victory. Bill Bedard was the Zurich marksman, scoring both goals. ZURICII 7 - GODERICH 2 Monday night the Zurich Bantams played host to Goder- ich and downed them 7-2. Jim Schram shot Goderich into a 1-0 lead in the first period. Pat Bedard and Harry Srnits added two goals minutes later to give Zurich a 2-1 margin. However, Goderich came back at the 13:50 mark with a goal by Kim Arbour to tie the game. Before the period ended Gerald Weido rallied for a goal to give Zurich a 3-2 lead. The only goal of the second period came at the 16:50 mark when Gerald Weido scored to give Zurich a slight 4-2 lead. The third period saw Zurich come out with three big goals to give them a 7-2 victory. Marksmen for Zurich in the final stanza were Harry Smits with two and Bill Bedard scor- ing the extra marker. There were sixteen penalties called with Goderich drawing ten, including a 10 -minute misconduct and a game mis- conduct. Zurich drew seven minor penalties. Hensall-Zurich rCo-Ops Split Two Game Series With 'Mitchell Hawks (by Doug Turkheim) Last Friday night the Clinton Juniors visited Zurich and carne up with a 5-1 victory over the Hensel).- Zurich Co -Ops. The Co -Ops lone goal was the first of the game with Brian Campbell scoring it at the 3:35 mark. Clinton took a two -goal lead before the first period end- ed, as they came up with three goals. Stu Mustard scored twice and Ron Henry added the extra marker to give Clinton their lead. The only scoring of the sec- ond period carne at 12:05 when Bill Stirling of Clinton gave them a 4-1 lead. Rich Graham scored the final Clinton goal midway through the final stanza to give Clinton the 5-1 victory. There were thirteen penalties called with Clinton drawing seven and Zurich six. BREAK EVEN In an home and home series between Mitchell and the Co - Ops, each team gained two points as Mitchell edged the Co -Ops 6-5 in Mitchell and then the Co -Ops downed Mit- chell 8-4 in Hensall. No score sheet was available from the Sunday game in Hensall. MITCHELL 6 - CO-OPS 5 Last Tuesday night the Hen- sall-Zurich Co -Ops motored to Information Day iFor Maple Syrup Producers No sooner has winter set in but we are thinking about spring. When we think about the first signs of spring we naturally thiel about maple syrup time. Modern techniques for prod- ucing high quality maple syrup will be discussed at local "Inf- ormation Days" meetings to be held in late January. Topics will include: (1) maple bush management (2) tapping techn- iques (3) transplanting of trees.. Meetings of local interest to persons residing in the Lake Huron District are scheduled as follows: Wednesday, January 27 for Oxford, Perth South and Huron South at the Hydro Building, London, at 10:00 a.m. We recommend to producers and other interested persons - plan now to attend the meeting in your area. Don't be left along the way because you failed to pay attention to new information which may help improve your maple syrup operation. Mitchell and were edged 6-5 in a very closely played game. Don Nicholson scored the tie-breaker only to see John McKinley come back and tie the game at 2-2. Each team scored once in the second period. Bob Garno- chan scored for Mitchell before Jim Ramer came back and tied the game at 3-3. Shane McKinnon put Zurich in front 4-3 when the third. period was only 20 seconds old. Dave Flanagan tied the game again for Mitchell. At the 10:10 mark Shane McKinnon scored Zurich's last goal to give them a 5-4 lead. Dave Flanagan carne back with two big goals to give Mitchell a 6-5 margin. There were 14 penalties cal- led with Mitchell drawing nine and the Co -Ops five. The next home game for the Hensall-Zurich Co -Ops is this Sunday at 2:00 p.m., when they play host to the league- leading Exeter Hawks, in the Zurich Arena." 0 Third Anniversary Of Church Union Observed The Third anniversary of church union between the former Evangelical United Brethren and United denominations was obs- erved at Emmanuel United Church, Zurich, on January 10. The minister recalled the union service in Zion Church, Kitchen• er, on January 10, 196 8. Speaking on "the Significance of Church Union" the members were asked to consider what dif- ference if any the union had made to them. Also in attendance, was Trent Doige, lay reader from Trivitt Memorial Anglican Church, Exeter, who, along with Mr. Huether, has been on a "joint study committee on -Union for Huron -Perth Presbytery and Hur- on Deanery. The subject of union between the Anglicans and United will be discussed later this month at Niagara Falls, when general council of the United Church and general synod of the Anglic- an church meet jointly. Mr. Doige spoke of the sign- ificance of union for the Anglic- ans and whether such a union would be favourable or not. E. D.
