The members of four standing committees were named, with the first named as chairman: Finance and Insurance Commit- tee-- Michael Connolly, R. R. 3, Kippen; Francis Hicknell and Christopher Walraven. Property Committee --John McCann, R. R. 3, Ailsa Craig; Vincent Young, Goderich; and David Teahen, Stratford. Transportat- ion Committee --Arthur Haid, R, R.4, Listowel; Oscar Kieffer, R. R.1, Bluevale; and F. J. Vere, Stratford, Personnel and Salary Negotiating Committee --Ted Geoffrey, R. R. 2, Zurich; James Morris, Stratford; and Pat Carty, R.12.5, Stratford, Rev. Carl Keane, of St. Jos- eph's parish, Stratford, Dean of Perth- Huron Deanery conducted devotional exercises to open the meeting. He also took the occasion to compliment the board on the progress in the school on the Canadian Catech- ism Program, Father Keane emphasized that the clergy of the deanery were very eager to assist the board and co-operate in any way with the schools toward attain- rent of "the Christian format- ion of our youth" based on the concept of parents, students, teachers, priests and school board working co-operatively to- gether. In other business the law firm of Donnelly and Murphy, God- erich was again named as solicit- ors for the board for 1971. Trustees Howard Shantz, Jos- eph Looby and Vincent Young and Superintendent of Education, John Vintar, were named to at- tend a School Board Administrat- ion Seminar in Toronto on Jan- uary 21 to 23. The seminar is titled Control and Autonomy -- Today's School Board. Trustees James Morris, Ted Geoffrey and Pat Carty and Mr. Vintar were mined to attend the Ontario School Trustees Council in Toronto on January 15 and 16. R. 3, Dashwood. A borrowing by-law was appr- oved for $850, 000. Mr. Vintar reported that the Seaforth Optimist Club had in- vited the separate schools in the Seaforth area to participate with other schools in a snow sculptur- ing contest during the Optimist Winter Carnival during the January 23 weekend. Claude Harvey and Victor Lindsay, of Stratford were re- appointed to the Stratford Public Library Board for one year to represent the board. John Vintar spoke to the trust- ees on public relations, stressing the necessity of maintaining public relations. IIe offered som; suggestions for further improve- ment in communication. Mr. Vintar stated that the principals' association has been involved at the staff level in an advisory capacity --the princip- als meet monthly and are inform ed of board decisions and mot- ions which affect their schools. The principals are then expect- ed to pass this information to their respective staffs. (continued on page 10) Kippers East Women's Instil ute Debate Value of New Type of Education The Christmas meeting of the Kippen East Women's Institute was held Monday night, December 21, at the home of the president, Mrs. R. Bell, with Mrs. G. Mac- Lean as co -hostess. The meeting had been postponed from the prev- ious Wednesday due to adverse weather conditions. The meeting opened with the Institute Ode, followed by the Mary Stewart Collect. The roll call was answered with "an inter- esting incident of your school days, " 'The motto was given by Mrs. A. McGregor and a reading by Mrs. K. McKay. Mrs. W.C. Bennett, of Seaforth gave a demonstration on candle making and gave a beautiful candle arrangement to the one with a birthday on Christmas Day or closest to it. Mrs. Robert Kins- man was the recipient. It was decided to send a gift of money to a family who was recent ly burnt out near Dublin. A debate was held entitidd "Re- solved that education received in the new Central Schools is to more advantage than the education re- ceived in the Little Red School House. Broadfoot; Citizenship and Education by Mrs. H, Cald- well. Mrs. R. Bell gave a poem. Mrs. C. Pullman convened the lunch, assisted by Mrs. K. Mc- Kay, Mrs. V. Alderdice, Mrs. M. Connolly and Mrs. D. Trieb= ser. There was a sunshine pal gift exchange and Santa arrived.
