Huron. MP Works
For Better Use
Of Clinton CFB
Robert McKinley, Conservative
MP for Huron, said Thursday he
has been given a firm indication
that the departments of national
defence and transport have agreed
to pool their air services training
schools and are now considering
a site on which to operate the
facilities.
Mr. McKinley hopes to obtain
the school for the Canadian
Forces Base at Clinton which is
to be phased out by the defence
department next September.
He has asked the warden of
Huron County, Stanley Township
council, the mayor of Clinton,
Ontario Treasurer Charles Mc-
Naughton, who represents Huron
in the legislature, and Education
Minister William Davis to join
in putting pressure on the federal
government to locate the school
at the base.
Mr. McKinley said the educ-
ation minister should be interest-
ed because Conestoga College
at Kitchener has made a proposal
for use of part of the base.
Neither the government nor
Conestoga would need all the
facilities there and joint use
would reduce the cost to both,
he suggested.
Mr. McKinley said Transport
Minister Don Jamieson had ind-
icated that a task force report,
which pointed out technical air
services schools of both depart-
ments could be amalgamated
with savings to both, has been
accepted.
It has been suggested that a
joint school would handle bet-
ween 300 and 400 trainees on a
continuing basis. The defence
department has normally provid-
ed on-site accommodation for
its trainees, while the transport
department has provided living
allowances but has required its
trainees to provide their own
accommodation.
The Clinton base's village
for married personnel would prov-
ide all the on-site accommod-
ation needed, Mr. McKinley
pointed out.
He said he has been warned
that other areas are competing
for the school, including a soon-
to-be abandoned armed forces
base at Summerside, P, E, I.,
and he is aware that a campaign
on behalf of Clinton is necessary.
