A New Method
Shirley Keller
It is getting uncomfortable
close to Christmas, isn't it?
Don't get me wrong. I love
Christmas. It is a wonderful
time of year. But quite frankly,
it gets a little expensive and
more than that, it becomes a
real headache when one doesn't
know what to buy for this one or
that one.
This year though, I said to
hang with the expense. This
year I'm going to give the illus-
ion of wealth when it comes to
my children and my husband, . .
so I devised a plan that is entir-
ely new to out household.
I posted a chart. It was just
a simple ruled chart with the
names of my husband and family
at the top of individual columns.
Each column contained several
spaces for entries by each mem-
ber of the family, . , and I request
ed that each person write down
those things he or she would like
to have for Christmas.
The cost, I told them, did
not matter. Just enter your wants
on the list and wait for Christ-
mas to roll around with the re-
sults.
Now you may thing that cert-
ainly isn't a very clever idea...
but that's because you aren't
clued in to the rest of the story
just yet.
In the very centre of the list
I placed my name... and of
course, the spaces to write
down those things which I would
like to receive for Christmas.
Now here's where the strategy
come; in.
On my list, I wrote things
like hand lotion and tea towels
and gloves and writing paper,
etc, etc. Nothing I wrote down
would cost over $2.
My family would waltz up to
the list to write down their fond-
est dreams and note what mother
had boldly written in the centre
column. I would watch from my
vantage point at the kitchen sink
as they read my list... then
seemed to reconsider their own.
"Is that all you want for Christ-
mas? my daughter asked.
"Yes dear, I told her.
"But that's not very much, she
protested.
"It is all I really need, " I
insisted. "After all, we have a
lovely home and plenty to eat
and to wear. What more could
anyone ask for?"
But if daddy only buys you
a bottle of hand lotion, " she
sputtered, "he's not going to
spend much more money on us
kids. "
"Don't be silly, " I scolded,
"I said you could write down
just anything at all on that list
and I'm not changing my mind
now." Just because I'm satisfied
with a little less is no real reason

My daughter looked at me a
long time. Then she went to the
list. I didn't even bother to
watch as she made her entries.

Urea for Ruminant
(This message brought to you

Urea is still the center of
controversy among some feed -
men. There are a number of
misleading Ideas expressed from
time to time, which we can't
take space to completely discuss
in this column. But the subject
deserves some comment.
First, urea is not a foreign
nutrient to the cow. The cow
actually has a urea cycle in
which large quantities of urea go
from saliva into the rumen, as
well as the secretion of urea
through the rumen wall. In a
dairy cow, the urea output am-
ounts to about 10 grams per day.
And research data clearly
shows that natural feed ingred-
ients such as alfalfa, oats, prot-
ein meals like soyabeans, and
mill feeds contain some urea.
Some of the misconceptions
may have arisen in feeders' mind.
from cases of improper use of
urea in beef or dairy cattle feeds,
But let's face it, even common
salt is dangerous when not used
properly in rations.
Urea contains no energy, no
vitamins, minerals or other
nutritional compounds, except
nitrogen, a characteristic comp-
onent of protein, and amino
acids.
Rumen micro-organisms break
down protein, as you know, into
peptides and amino acids, and
finally to ammonia. Ammonia is
used by most rumen microorg-
anisms to synthesize bacterial
and protozoal protein. It is this
bacterial ability that allows you
to feed urea to your cows. Urea
problems can arise because the
rumen bacteria can form ammon-
ia from urea four times as fast
as ammonia can be re-syntlies-
ized into microbial protein. So
either ammonia formation needs
to be slowed down, or use of am-
monia speeded up.
Our next column will deal
with ways and means to bring
about optimum use of urea in
feeds.

nt. On the list she wrote things
like skate warmers and skate
guards and hairbands and mittens
etc.
I think it is called psychology.
But there's more.
When I come to buy my Christ-
mas gifts for the family, I may
not stick to the list for a mother
always knows what it is her child
will cherish most.
There may be enough money
in the budget to indulge each
child (and hubby) in one or two
special gifts. It will give me
greater pleasure than ever before
to really surprise them with
items they were not expecting..
and I'll just bet you that they
will be thoroughly delighted
and about 100 percent more sat-
isfied this Christmas than they
have been for a few years now.
There's only one thing I
haven't figured out yet. How am
I going to get my family to ig-
nore what I've written on the
list so that I can have what I
really want most of all - their
love, the trust and their respect.
