Veteran Reeve Defeated In Grand Bend Vote A veteran of almost 10 years in Grand Bend municipal life, Orval Wassmann went down to defeat as reeve of the summer resort on Monday, when John Payne was elected to the post with a majority of only 10 votes over the incumbent. Payne picked up 177 votes compared to 167 for Wassmann, while the third man in the race Howard Green, polled 124 votes. For Payne this was his second try for the office as reeve, as he was defeated by Wassmann in the last election. It is the first time Payne will be a member of the municipal council. Heading the polls in the cont- est for four council seats in Grand Bend was Mrs. Shirley Sylvester, with 311 votes, while former clerk -treasurer Murray Desjardine picked up 290. Both are newcomers to the office. The other two members of council will be Dave Jackson, with 259 votes and Ivan Luther with 255. Both are presently members of the council. In the balloting for Public Utilities Commission in Grand Bend, Lawrence Mason headed the polls with 246 votes, while the other member is Prosper Vanbrauene, with 225. Defeated in the election for Public Utilit- ies Commission were Roland Grenier, with 141; William Baird with 113 and Jack Mennell, with 90. The two defeated candidates in the council race were Wil- liam Cochrane with 205 votes and Ian Coles with 147. Coles is presently a member of the council. Listowel took a 4-3 lead at the end of the first period. Zurich scorers in the first were Bob Buchanan with two and Fred Lamb with one. The end of the second period saw the game stand at a 5-5 tie. George Suplat scored both Zurich goals in the second stanza. The final period saw Zurich again outscore their opponents 2-1. On Tuesday night in Zurich, the Combines came through with a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Wingham Goodyears, when they scored three big goals in the sec- ond period. The teams exchanged first period goals, with John Loader being the marksman for Zurich. In the second period Loader came through with his second marker, and George Suplat and Bill Hoffman each registered one.
