Huron Pays Tribute to MacNaughtons
(continued from page 1)
have turned my way, " tie told
the Prime Minister.
Other speakers at the event
included Robert E. McKinley,
Huron MP, and Elsner D. Bell,
Q.C. former president of the
Ontario PC Association, who
headed the committee respons-
ible for arranging the big night.
Mr. MacNaughton, 59, form-
er manager of an Exeter seed
mill, has represented Huron
since 1958. Appointed minister
without portfolio in 1961, he
was named minister of highways
a year later, and treasurer in
1966.
Local riding officials admitted
they were overwhelmed at what,
technically, was to have been
a fund-raising event for the rid-
ing.
The dinner cost $10 a plate.
It was held in the drill hall of
the former air force base which
is a living symbol of what
Charles MacNaughton has done
tor his riding.
When the air force pulled out,
taking with it many civilian jobs,
the provincial government, with
the hand of Mr. MacNaughton
in the background, took over
the hangars and barracks and
created an industrial park to be
operated by the Ontario Develop-
ment Corporation.
Mr. Bell termed the evening
"tremendous tremendous tribute to Charlie
and Addie (Mr. MacNaughton's
wife) . "
Mr. Bell said some people re-
questing tickets had to be turned
away.
Lorne Henderson, MPP (PC-
Lambton). said the private
members on the government
side had one word for Charles
MacNaughton: "He's the greatest'
Neither Mr. MacNaughton
nor the premier would comment
about their political careers.
The treasurer indicated there
was nothing really significant
about his use of the past tense
in talking about the premier.
