Varna Area Farmer Again Heads
Ontario Federation. of Agricuture
The Ontario Federation of
Agriculture showed its confid-
ence in an outcast farm union
member Monday be electing
him by acclamation to his sec-
ond term as president during the
opening session of its annual
convention in Toronto.
Gordon Hill, 44, of Varna,
operator of a 700 -acre livestock
and cash crop unit received a
standing ovation as he strode to
the platform after seven others
nominated for the post withdrew.
Among those seven was the
name of Walter Miller, the vice-
president of the National Farm-
er's Union, which is at odds with
the OFA on most farm policies. 1
Mr. Hill is just completing
his first year as head of the re- '
organized federation. He is a
former president and now an out-
cast member of the rival Ontario
Farmers Union.
"I have no doubt that for the
president to carry out his oblig-
ation, he must have your support)
I thought an election would be
a good way to find that out, but
your attitude today shows that
we are united. " said Mr. Hill.
"We will have a better year
next year than we did this year
by going down the road together.
We laid the foundation last year
and now we are going to pile
the blocks on and up until farm-
ers have a real say in their ind-
ustry."
Mr. Hill became fully involv-
ed in the federation only last
year after the defeat of the
General Farm Organization pleb-
escite in Ontario.
As a member of Ontario's
special committee on farm in-
come, Mr. Hill was a strong
advocate of a GFO to unite all
Ontario Farmers.
Outside the convention hall,
Mr. Hill said he hoped the new
year would see increasedpartic-
ipation among farmers and a
much stronger membership. He
hoped revenue could be increas-
ed through the sale of more
memberships to enable the fed-
eration to hire additional staff
with legal, economic and sociol-
ogical skills.

its meeting at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Harold Horner with 30
members present. The topic
"Can Farmers have old age sec-
urity, " taken by Aaron Oestrei-
