Phosphorous Level
In Swine Feed
Has Advantages
(This message brought to you
through the courtesy of the Hen-
sall District Co -Operative,)
Lately many researchers in
universities have been referring
to the advantages of high phos-
phorous levels in swine feed,
Three years ago, we had some
strong evidence of the value of
phosphorous and began building
higher levels of it in our swine
rations.
One of the recent papers in
the Journal of Animal Science
from the University of Illinois
points out the effects of three
different levels of phosphorous
on growth,
The study involved 70 lb, pigs,
being raised to 200 lbs. They
were fed a basic 166/0 protein with
, 83% calcium and phosphorous
levels of .34/0, .5410 and .7510.
Average daily gain was from
.98 lbs. for the lo west phosphor-
ous level, to 1, 4 lb. and 1.5 ib.
for the next two levels, Feed
efficiency improved from 4.03
lbs, /lb, of grain to 3.38 lbs. /lb,
for pigs on highest phosphorous
level.
Stating it another way, on a
ton basis, one ton of higher
phosphorous diets produced an
additional 58 lbs. of live pork,
or 45 lbs, of dressed pork. If
market value is 25 cents per
pound, then the additional gross
income to the producer is $11,30
ton of feed used.
