ST. BONIFACE STUDENTS STAGE REMEMBRANCE DAY PROGRAM
Huron Board of Education Plan New
System of Kindergarten Transportation
(continued from page 6)
half-day every day system for
kindergarten.
"I think it is fair to say that
when this thing hit the papers,
there was quite a reaction from
the principals and teachers, "
said Cochrane. "They are con-
verted to the alternate day kind-
ergarten classes and are perfect-
ly satisfied to remain on that
system. "
"That is their perrogative, "
pointed out Jim Taylor.
"It isn't their perrogative the
way the motion reads, " said
Elliott. "It's the perrogative of
the parents to decide if they want
half-day or full-day kindergart-
en classes for their children."
"I don't think a vote by the
parents should decide when
kindergarten should he held, "
said John Broadfoot. "I think
that's our job. If the motion was
passed, the board would be oblig-
ated to accept directives from
the parents. I don't think that;s
what we are here for."
"We're not thinking of the
students, " noted John Henderson,
"We're thinking of the costs. "
"None of us are convinced
that the youngsters suffer a hard-
ship by attending kindergarten
for a full day every other day, "
stated the chairman. "Is the
cost involved too great for the
little bit of extra help offered
to the children."
"I would like to see the policy
treat all schools in the county
alike, " insisted Elliott.
Gordon Moir referred to cor-
respond once from the minister
of education urging school boards
to clamp down on spending.
A motion was made that
kindergarten transportation re-
main the same as at present in
the county with transportation
arrangements in McKillop to
be assess ed at the tikne of dos-
ing the one -room schools.
This motion was automatically
defeated when board members
were tied six to six on the issue.
Another motion was then int-
roduced to approved the cost sur-
vey with the principals and the
kindergarten teachers to decide
whether kindergarten be held
on alternate days year round or

on half days from the first of
September until the end of Dec-
ember and on alternate days
from the first of January to the
end of June.
That motion was also defeated.
The successful motion to stand-
ardize the alternate day program
in the rural schools across the
county beginning January 1, 1971
was then introduced and passed.

Board Chairman
Will Retire
Chairman of the Huron County
Board of Education, John Lavis,
announced Monday evening in
Clinton he would not be a cand-
idate for the 1971-72 term of
office.
"I decided to make my intent-
ions known before the municipal
elections, " stated Lavis. "I am
this year completing 18 years as
a school board member. I know
I will miss all the associations
with the work that has become a
part of my life."
No other board member accep-
ted Mr. Lavis' invitation to de-
clare his or her intentions for
the coming school board nomin-
ations.
An oral report was presented
by Director of Education John
Cochrane to the effect that
Clinton Town Police had not
yet made an official report to
the Board of Education regard-
ing the bomb 'scares in Clinton.
Fuel oil tenders accepted for
the winter showed that fuel
ranged in price from 10.8 per
gallon at Central Huron Second-
ary School to 15. 9 in the one -
room McKillop schools.
Max Malpass, reporting on the
caretaking supply tenders, said
the saving this year would be
"in the thousands of dollars."
"I'd be quite interested to
know exactly how many thous-
ands, " said chairman Lavis.
"This is one area a county
board of education can justify
its existence - by purchasing
in quantity."
