Golden Glimpses . .
At the moment, the weather
man seems to be smiling favour-
ably upon us. Our flowers are
defying the rather severe frost
shich surrounded us over the
weekend and contintte to bloom
in profusion. Mrs. Boyes brought
two beautiful large yellow roses
to me this morning, the last
two buds, which were picked
yesterday. I am wondering if
this might not be somewhat of
a record for this time of the
year. We are interested to know
just how long our flowers can
continue to bloom before being
cut down by frost, and so we dis-
couraged Mr. Amos Gingerich
from pulling them when he ap-
peared with his tractor and trail-
er the other day.
We had a full week of activity
here at the home. Tuesday even-
ing being film night, we had two
interesting films. The first one
was the Musical Ride, which
many of you have enjoyed wat-
ching at the London Fair two or
three years ago. This was of
great interest to our residents,
many of whom stayed to see it
through the second time. The
'second film was one of Portugal,
a most informative one, showing
how the Portugese earn their
livelihood. One of their main.
sources of revenue being from
the manufacture of Port wine,
and it was interesting to see how
the grapes are picked in large
wicker baskets and transported
on the heads of the workmen
from the vineyard to the winery
where the labourers trample them
with bare feet to extract the
juice.
The Women's Auxiliary held
their monthly meeting on Wed-
nesday evening. Mr. Gerald
Gingerich showed slides of the
recent chartered trip to the
British Isles. Following the prog-
ram, lunch was served. Thurs-
day evening being bingo night,
the residents enjoyed a few
games before being entertained
by the Zurich Band. Our hospital
patients were also able to enjoy
the music by means of the inter-
com. Many favourable remarks
were made by the residents, and
we hope they will plan to visit
us again soon. On Thursday
afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer
of Loafing Achers, St. Marys,
called to visit with some of their
old friends and acquaintenances
of the St. Mary's district and
who are now residents here. Mr.
Sawyer carried his violin under
his arm, and when he sat down
in the sitting room proceeded to
play many of the old familiar
tunes. Needless to say, he soon
had a large audience, and one
or two of his listeners facoured
with a little step dance. One of
our residents was heard to remark,
"that brings back wonderful mem
ories." We are hoping that others
in the community who might
have such talents, might care
enough to share some of their
leisure time with our residents
as did Mr. and Mrs, Sawyer.
Friday evening, family night,
was a huge success. We had a
.. at BWRH
full house. Visitors came from
London, Sarnia, Goderich, St.
Marys, Thedford, Seaforth, Hen-
sall, Bayfield and surrounding
community. Pictures were shown
of Switzerland, and a group of
singers from the Thames Valley
Swiss Club, Mitchell area, in
native custume and under the
direction of Mrs. Munz, entert-
ained the audience with their
native songs and dances. At the
insistance of Mrs. Munz, Mr.
Risi joined in the singing and
dances, which no doubt brought
back many fond memories of
his homeland. We are grateful to
this group for their effort in help-
ing to make this event such a
success. We found there were
several other Swiss families in
our community, and we are
pleased that they came out and
hope they enjoyed the evening.
Following the program, a delic-
ious smorgasbord lunch with a
Swiss flavor was served under
the capable hands of Mrs. Ellen
Horn and her kitchen assistants.
Sunday evening -the chapel
service was conducted by Rev.
L. H. Kalbfleisch, of Zurich.
Mrs. Margaret Hess was the
organist, and we thank them
for their interest.
We would like to remind you
of our Bazaar, on November 21,

results in the hobby shop, and if

Wedding

London was decorated with bask-

double ring ceremony of Elaine
Miller and Hank Bouwman, Oct-

Given in marriage by her
father, the bride was lovely in

rose. She carried a bouquet of
sweetheart roses and white carn-
ations.
The maid of honor, Janet
Bouwman, sister of the groom,
