HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1970-11-05, Page 16PAGE SIXTEEN ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS Co-op Juniors Register Win and Loss The Hensall-Zurich Co -Ops came through with a win and a loss in their first two games of the schedule in OHA Junior D competition, when they edged the Lucan Irish 4-3 in Zurich last Friday night, and then came out on the short end of a 6-3 score against Lambeth Flyers in Zurich, on Sunday afternoon. CO-OPS 4 - LUCAN 3 In the first period Friday night the locals traded goals with the Irish with John Corriv- eau finding the range for the Co -Ops and Jim Hearn for Luc - an. Ken Needham shot the Trish into a 2-1 lead in the sec- ond stanza, and then in the third Aubrey Bedard rifled in a pass from Jim Ramer and John McKinley to tie the score at 2-2. With less than a minute left to play, Fred Elder slapped in a pass from John McKinley to score the win- ning marker for the local squad in their first scheduled game of the season. The Irish were up to their old tricks again on Friday night, and were handed a total of 14 penalties, compared to only six for the Ilensall-Zurich squad. LAMBETH 6 - CO-OPS 3 In the Sunday afternoon cont- est the local squad posted a 2-0 lead by the 5.11 mark of the second period, before the Lamb- eth squad found their wings. John McKinley opened the scor- ing for the Co -Ops at 17.04 of the first, and then Shane McKin• non scored on a neat passing play from McKinley and Ron Corriveau at the 5,.11 mark of the second to give the locals their temporary 2-0 lead. In the next ten minutes of,the per- iod, Randy Elirick blinked the red light once and Gary Comf- ort twice for the Flyers to give them a 3-2 lead. John McKin- ley scored late in the period to bring the Co -Ops right back in- to contention, but then the third period proved to be their downfall. Hugh Mitchell, Greg Stellis and Sharon Kelly scored in that order for Lambeth to give them their 6-3 victory. A total of 28 penalties were called in the rugged contest, with 16 of them going to the locals and 12 to the visitors. 0 DRUG ABUSE (continued from page 1) occurs in programs from grades five to twelve. Mr. Coulter also presented a report on current practices of religious education in Huron County in schools. He said the all elementary schools opened each day with religious exercises and that no formal program of religious in- struction was reported by any secondary school in the county. Mr. Coulter added that all but three elementary schools registered dissatisfaction with the guidebooks for teaching religion which were issued. Annual Meeting OF Bible Society Rev. Leonard W. Schnell will be the guest speaker for the local annual Bible Society meeting. He has formerly ser- ved as District Secretary for the Saskatchewan Area.
