Practical Tips on Dairy Feeding
(This message brought to you
through the courtesy of Hensall
District Co-operative).
Dairymen know that average
milk production per cow has
rapidly increased, especially
in recent years. Dairymen, plant
breeders,• nutritionists, genetic-
ists, and others can share the
credit. The fact is, the cow has
adapted to all this, and still has
genetic ability in many cases,
to produce at levels beyond our
ability to nourish them.
The challenge has been to
find ways to get more production
through nutritional improve-
ments.
The problems in formulating
dairy rations for today's cows is
more involved than just a quest-
ion of protein and energy levels.

fibre sources to maintain ru-
men function, and normal but-
terfat test.
The increased use of corn sil-
age, high moisture grains, and
haylage, all complicate the
task of ensuring that the formul-
ated grain mix meets the cow's
requirements for TDN, (mega-
calories), digestible protein,
minerals, vitamins, etc.
These five points will help
you to ensure you are feeding a
balanced ration.
1. Evaluate the feeding prog-
ram you use, on the basis of
the entire ration, not grain only.
2. Feed the cow at levels she
can respond to in the different
stages of her production cycle.
3. Try to keep quality and quant
ity of feeds uniform.
4. In large herds where group
feeding is practiced, cull out
those cows that fatten, rather
than produce milk.
5. No magic will replace good
management, and wise use of
quality feeds.
