Yes, I'Ln on again about the kids. .. the teenagers of this nation who are driving so many of us crazy with their mod clothes and their way-out ideas. I've said it before and I'll say it again. We're on a youth kick... with the kids doing the kicking. But I i'eally don't think it is their fault. I think the adults are running scared.. . and I think we should be asham- ed of ourselves. I'm getting plainly fed up with these well-meaning but chicken -livered types who be- lieve you should praise a young- ster but never contradict him; entertain him, but never work him; humor him, but never cross him. Is it really any wond- er that the teenag population is fast losing respect for the older generation when adults can't even issue a simple directive anymore without cringing and cowering lest youth rise up ag- ainst them ? It is obviously against the code these days to expect kids to con- form to the ways of society. Naturally the kids are bound to disagree with certain aspects of the Establishment's way of life. It was ever thus. But is it wrong to expect youth to choose the due process of government and law to ach- ieve change rather than to sit- in or stand -down like a temper - mental two-year old whenever there's something not to their liking? Is it wrong to•expect youth to be chaste when there is immor- ality and obscenity all around them? Is it really wrong to tell a kid he's off base - he's heading out into left field on a foul ball? I hope it isn't because that's what 1 tell every teenager with whom I come in contact.. if I think he or she should hear it. I'm not afraid to crack a few whips and slap a few wrists if I feel the situation warrants it, but some people would crucify me for that action just because of an unwritten and unspoken rule which forbids a truthful assessment of youth in general. It is permissable to whisper in quiet, adult parties that ^ome youthful activity is deplorable, that young people are lazy and apathetic, that kids are ungrate- ful, unco- operative and disresp- ectful, It is quite another thing to tell the kids exactly how you feel. Never chastise, say the majority, lest you be chastised. I have a real hang-up on honesty, I guess. It is a carry- over, I suspect, from my child- hood when I got straight, truth- ful answers to any questions I cared to pose at my parents. There wasn't any hanky-panky. I got the facts... right from the shoulder. If there wasn't money for a new dress, I knew there was a tight money situation. If the neighbour got very fat very suddenly, I knew she was carry- ing an infant in her tummy. If mom and dad had an argument, I knew it was because a four - dollar roast got burned. Today's kids are sheltered from all this... and they 're protected from other things too... like being told they should obey society's laws just because they are the laws; like knowing that lifting a fork from the restaurant is nothing less than theft; like understanding that life gets hard- er, not easier, as you grow older and that with increased freedom GUARANTEED PRICE SUPPLEMENT BOOKING YOUR CO-OP OFFERS YOU DAIRY -BEEF - PIG SUPPLEMENTS -- AT — SPECIAL BOOKING PRICES and will guarantee these prices through the winter feeding period. The youth of today is more knowledgeable than youth has ever been, yet we don't trust them to understand the basic rule for a happy life, to give of yourself for others. If you can't get a good look at yourself, how can you satis- factorily straighten your tie or freshen your makeup... or order your life, for that matter. Where are all the mirrors these days ? 0 Howick Reeve (continued from page 11) Robinson stated that sine a the Perth resolution had been introd- uced, there was an investigation planned into the workings of the Perth County Board of Educ- ation. Walter Sheardown, deputy - reeve of Goderich, asked the committee to explain its reas- oning for not concurring with a Goderich Town Council resolut- ion to have welfare assistance administered by the province. Alexander answered that the committee had not wanted to give the province "another foot- hold. " Sheardown noted that welfare assistance cases in Goderich had risen from 38 in August to 53 in September. "It is over -taxing our staff at the town hall, " Sheardown stated "That was the reason for the resolution." In other business, council learned that salaries paid to the secretarial staff have been rev- iewed and a new schedule will be in effect in 1971. There was no indication in the report as to the terms of the schedule except to note that sick leave credits will be adjusted from one day to one and one half days per month effective January 1, 1971. In the future, all secretarial staff being engaged by the county department will be chan- nelled through "one person and one person only." This policy is set out only to retain uniformity among this particular section of the county staff, the report concluded.
