50 Years Ago
The local branch of the Wom-
en's Institute entertained the
Crediton Society on Thursday
last, at the home of Mrs. C.
Fritz. Both Institutes had a most
enjoyable time. A splendid prog-
ram was presented by the visitors.
A great deal of interest was
shown in the instructive paper by
Mrs, S. M, Hauch.
Mrs. Gertrude Hess, had the
misfortune to fall last Friday, anc
in doing so broke several ribs,
also sustaining other minor injur-
ies.
The anniversary services of
Calvary Evangelical Church,
Dashwood, have been post-poned
to Sunday, November 14. A
special lecture will be given in
the church on Sunday evening.
The fowl supper given in the
Walper House by the Lutheran
Ladies Aid last Thursday, was
in every way a success. The prog:
am presented in the town hall
after the supper, was enjoyed by
all.
Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Smith of
St. Joseph, attended the funeral
of the late John Groff, at Baden,
last week.
40 Years Ago
Mrs. D. Ayotte is spending
a week or so in Detroit.
Mr, and Mrs. William Reith
and family were weekend visitors
in Glencoe.
Rev. and Mrs. W. Y. Dreier
were visitors with their daughter
at Buffalo, during the past week.

Sunday visitors at Blake and
G od erich.
Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Gascho,
are getting nicely settled in
their new home recently purch-
ased from the Rennie Estate.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Haist,
of Detroit, were visitors with
the latter's parents, Mr. and
Mrs. 0, Klopp, a few days this
week.
Mr. and Mrs. Heywood, who
spent the summer on afarm near
Hensall, moved back to the
Goshen Line north on Tuesday
of this week.
Harold Klopp, of Detroit,
visited at his home for a few
days this week,
Herbert Wein, the popular
garageman of Dashwood, made
a business call in Zurich on
Monday.

Wes Hugill has purchased the
property of Mrs. Hugh Thiel, in
Zurich, and will receive possess-
ion in April. Mr. and Mrs. Carl
Thiel and Mr. and Mrs. Ed
Edighoffer are residing in the
dwelling at the present time.
Private and Mrs. Harold Thiel,
and son Robert, have returned
to Zurich. Private Thiel is ret-
urning to civilian life.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Thiel have
moved into their new home
which they purchased from Miss
Jane Lamont.
Richard Pawley and Miss Hurst,
of Stratford, visited with Mr.
and Mrs. Harold Stade, on Sund-
ay.
A number of local men are
deer hunting in northern Ontario
this week. One group consists of
Dr. H.H. Cowan, of Exeter,
Albert Hess, Melvin and Har-
rison Schoch, Lloyd, Leroy and
Lennis O'Brien, Harvey Clausius,
Ward Fritz and Earl Yungblut, of
Zurich, Gordon and Stanley
Smith, of the Bluewater Highway
Mr. and Mrs. Napoleon Bedard
have moved into the apartment
owned by Fred Thiel.

Miss Arlene Haberer, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Hab-
erer, of Zurich was chosen by
Beta Sigma Phi, of Exeter, as
the winner of their $50. scholar-
ship.

dust on Saturday, is in much
improved condition in St, Jos-
eph's Hospital, London.
Mr, and Mrs. Mervyn Tiernan,
Dashwood held a family gather-
ing Sunday, last in honor of
the latter's father, Henry Hoff-
man, 'on the occasion of his 80th
birthday.
Mr, and Mrs. Ted Haberer
were visitors with friends in Sarn-
ia on Sunday.
Mrs. L. Rose visited at the
home of her son at Detroit, also
with relatives at Windsor rec-
ently.
Mr, and Mrs. Ted Rader were
visitors at the home of their
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. E.
Horm an, Woodstock.

Nomination for the village of
Zurich will be held on Friday,
November 25, from the hours of
7 p.m. to 8 p. m. in the Town -
ship Hall.
Five new members were wel-
comed into the Zurich Lions
Club at the induction ceremony
held in connection with the reg-
ular dinner meeting Monday
evening, at the Dominion Hotel.
Hon. John P. Robarts, Minister
of Education for Ontario, will
officiate at S.H,D.H.S., in
Exeter, on Friday, November 18,
when the opening of the new
addition to the school is sched-
uled to take place.
A new grader and snowplow
will be delivered to Stanley
Township Council later this week.
it was disclosed at the regular
council meeting held in the
township hall, Varna, on Mon-
day, November 7.
Mr. and Mrs. William Merner
and family, of London, were
weekend visitors with members
of their family in Zurich.
Kenneth Weido, who is teach-
ing High School in Listowel, was
a weekend visitor at the home
of his parents, Mr, and Mrs.
Earl Weido.

35th Anniversary
On Sunday, November 1, Mr,
and Mrs, Clarence Schade were
honoured by their family on the
occasion of their 35th wedding
anniversary. They were taken
to the Dufferin Hotel for dinner.
Later they enjoyed a pleasant
afternoon at home with their
family. Anniversary cake and
ice cream was served later in
the afternoon.
They have four daughters,
Mrs. Earl (Margaret) Horner,
of Zurich; Mrs. Jack (Elaine)
Dunn, of Bayfield; Mrs. Doug
(Phyllis) Lightfood, of Crediton;
and Mrs. Erle (Mona) Hamilton,
of Leury. They also have eleven
grandchildren.
Hawick Reeve
Critical of
County Boards
Reeve Harold Robinson, Ho-
wick, asked members of the
Huron County executive com-
mittee Friday afternoon why it
had not recommended to concur
with a resolution from the
County of Perth to abolish Cou-
nty Boards of Education.
"I think it is regrettable, "
stated Robinson.
Chairman Jack Alexander
told him his committee had felt
that since the county boards of
education had been established
at considerable expense, "they
should have a chance,
Reeve James Hayter, Stephen
reminded council that if rate-
payers felt the cost of education
were too high, they would have
an opportunity very shortly to
elect new board members whom
they felt would keep a closer
eye on expenses.
Charles Thomas, reeve of
Grey, said he had been receiv-
ing some complaints which
should have gone to the school
board.
"I'm just not sure that the
county school board is working
very well when this happens, "
added Thomas.
