ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS
From My Window
Pleasant Experience
Shirley Keller
They've finally done it, lad-
ies. Of course I knew they prob-
ably would although, to be
truthful, the idea never really
stuck in my brain. But yea,
they have finally experimented
with an instant abortion pill.
I was having my coffee when
I first read the news about the
discovery.
"How long?" I asked the
toaster. "How long will God
Almighty permit man to tamper
with his own fate and not step
in with some fierce discipline?"
I read on in complete amaze-
ment. A doctor by the name of
R. T. Ravenholt claims, "This
is going to free women forever
from the reporductive slavery.
For the first time a woman will
be able to have perfect control
over her menstrual period and
the only babies born are going
to be wanted babies."
The pill, I understand, would
be used only once monthly, or
even less often depending on
whether or not the woman has
reason to suspect that contracept-
ion has taken place.
At the first sign or inclination
of pregnancy, the lady hauls
out her little packet of magical
pellets and sits back in confidenc
knowing that she will instantan-
eously have conclusive proof
that her worries are over for yet
another month.
I'm not foing to feed you with
any gobbly-gook about the bles-
sings of motherhood. We've been
over that a few times and if I
recall correctly, I was severely
reprimanded by one reader for
even suggesting that some babies
born to some respectable, legal-
ly married, financially comfort-
able couples are not wanted.
I'm as serious as anyone about
motherhood, and yet I know for
certain that an unwanted preg-
nancy can be a shattering exp-
erience for both husband and wife
Motherhood is great - up to a
point. Then who needs it? Or
wants it?
But as much as I abhore the
thought of an unwanted preg-
nancy for any woman, I wonder
at the wisdom of such a simple
device as a pill to terminate
it just at the whim of the moth-
er. I see it as something like
gossip - pleasant to have around
but deadly to use.
For me, I'd rather muddle
through in niy own primitive
way - hoping against hope that
our family is as large as it will
ever get but letting the good
Lord have the final decision
about that in our house.
For others, instant abortion
would be a certain boon. It
would ensure, I suppose, that
since all babies would be want-
ed babies, we could expect top
performance from parents. No
more juvenile delinquents. No
more frustrated, emotionally
disturbed children due to un-
happy parents. No more scream-
ing, feet -stamping kids because
parents don't care about them.
Home would be a haven once
more with mom and dad loving
the kids and the kids, in return,
basking and flourishing in the
light of all this love.
It would assure, I suspect,
only happy marriages because
young lovers would be able to
glue vent to all their emotions
without fear of pregnancy, or
even worry that the young lady
will forget to take her birth
control pill. There will be a
grand exchange of sexual partn-
ers to seek out just the right
degree of compatibility in the
nuptial bed - and then marital
bliss will be assured with babies
being born only in May, just
after the cold of winter and just
before the heat of summer.
It would give the Labor Dep-
artment an additinnal clause for
its legislation concerning preg-
nancy in working women which

would include severe penalties
for the careless female who per-
mitted herself the luxury of an
unwanted pregnancy... maybe
she couldn't decide whether or
not she did or didn't want this
baby until it was too late for
the abortion pill to be safe,
It would allow school boards
to issue directives like: Children
born in July are at just about
the proper stage of development
to start kindergarten in Septemb-
er. Have your babies in July and
get your children off on the right
foot at school.
If you let your imagination
run wild you can see why the
instant abortion pill will be
greeted with open arms by the
men and women who would
like order in their lives. But
for nuts like me who prefer the
excitement of never really
knowing for sure what's ahead
yet trusting that whatever it is
will be the best possible thing
for me, the instant abortion
pill is about as absurd as a tele-
phone which doesn't ring.
It boils down to a matter of
personal preference, I guess -
and how much faith you have in
that Supreme Being most people
admit exists.

Ontario Federation Head Pleased With
New Tax Reductions for Farmers
The provincial government
rebate of $20 million to farm
property owners is a triumph for
farmers and their organizations
according to Ontario Federation
of Agriculture President, Gordon
Hill.
"Never before in the history
of Ontario agriculture have
organized farmers succeeded in
winning such large concessions
for property owners, " Mr. Hill
said, last Friday.
"Farmers by withholding their
education taxes dramatically
told the government of their
hard-pressed situation - a sit-
uation in which farmers pay 12
percent of their net incomes in
the form of property taxes,
whereas others pay only 4.5
percent - and the government
responded by granting farmers
a 25 percent rebate on their
property taxes,"
A poll by mail of all O.F.A,
members found that a conclus-
ive majority were prepared to
accept the property tax rebate
as the first step towards a sol-
ution of the education tax prob-
lem.
Said Mr. Hill, "Our members
have given us a clear directive
on this issue. They want us to
reduce the intensity of our tax
withholding campaign for the
present. But at the same time,
they want us to press govern-
ment for action on our demands
for a system of education tax-
ation based on ability to pay,
rather than property.
"Further, they demand that
the government implement the
recommendations of the Com -
y.
mittee on Assessment and Tax-
ation so that those farmers in
high land areas adjacent to ex-
panding urban centres are not
penalized for their location.
"Our members await a state-
ment from government on its
plan to remove all education
taxes from all property. And if
government doesn't show a
willingness to change, our mem-
bers will resort to more direct
action again. "

School Held For
Community Leader
A successful three-day indust-
rial development training course
for businessmen and civic lead-
ers was held October 14 to 16 at
the Canadian Armed Forces base,
Clinton.
Sponsored by the Technology
Section, Ontario Department
of Trade and Development and
the Midwestern Ontario Regional
Development Council, the
course concentrated on industrial
development practices and meth-
ods.
Community leaders in attend-
ance studied organization plan-
ning for industrial development,
land use, financing of develop-
ments, promotion, and seeking
of prospects.
Course study also centred on
effective co-ordination among
federal, provincial, and com-
munity agencies.
