purchase price per snowmobile
was $840. and total capital
expenditure including clothes,
trailers, etc. was an average of
$1, 200. per snowmobile owner.
The report said seasonal expend-

About 100, 000 snowmobile
owners in Ontario registered
113, 289 snow vehicles by the
end of March, 1970. The report
said 89,4 per cent of the owners
owned one snowmobile only, 10
per cent of the owners owned
two snowmobiles, and 0.6 per
cent of the owners owned three
or more snowmobiles.
The average age of owners
was about 40 years, and a fam-
ily had two children. On the
average, Mr. Auld said, there
were 3.4 snowmobiles per fam-
ily, It could be estimated, the
Minister said, that there were
340, 000 snowmobilers in Ont-
ario last season, or one out of
every twenty persons in Ontario
used a snowmobile some time or
another during the 1969-70 wint-
er season.
The report found that most
snowmobilers were satisfied
with the number and quality of
areas available to snowmobiling
(78. S% satisfied, 21.1% not sat-
isfied). Mr. Auld said half of
the owners came from urban
areas (51.2%) and the rest from
rural areas (48. 8/0).
The average number of days
snowmobiling per season was 41.9
with an average of 3.7 hours per
day which, the Minister said,
gives 155 hours per owner per
season. The report said 40 per
cent of the snowmobilers spent
an average 12, 9 nights out of
residence due to snowmobiling,
and the usage of the snowmobile
at night was 31 per cent. The
Minister said only 3.7 per cent
used public roads while snow-
mobiling, whereas only 0.9 per
cent wanted to use public roads
at all. 97.3 per cent of all
snowmobiles had not been in-
volved in a major accident dur-
ing the season, Mr. Auld said.
