Plan Now For Treatment Of
Warble Fly Beef Cattle
(This message brought to you
through the courtesy of the Hen-
sail
-tensail District Co -Operative.)
In areas where warble fly
populations are high, beef feed-
ers need to be planning treat-
ment right now. The reason is
plain to old hands in the beef
game and it is simply a case of
cost,
It is difficult to put an exact
dollar figure on the cost, but
estimates vary from $20 per
head down to $8 per head. When
you measure the treatment cost
of something less than 40 cents
per head, you can't afford not
to treat for warble control.
A treatment I like to recom-
mend, consists of the applicat-
ion of our liquid warble killer
Ruelene 25E) Follow directions
on the package carefully.
This product is safe but you
might find in certain situations
that the animals develop bloat.
This is a result of killing large
numbers of warble larva in the
animals esophagus. Larva tend
to congregate there. When they
are killed, a temporary swelling
of the infested area sometimes
occurs. This interferes with
normal belching of rumen gases
and creates a bloat condition.
Usually recovery is made in 48
hours. However, if the bloat
becomes severe, use a trocar
and cannula to relieve the pres-
sure rather than a stomach tube.
A tube could damage the esopha
gus.
Sometimes the killing of lar-
va in the spinal canal causes
slight paralysis. The condition
disappears as the swelling goes
down, but you won't be able to
do anything to hasten the drop
in swelling.
If you are buying stocker calve:
this month, check to determine
if your cattle come from a high
warble fly population area. If so,
don't delay treatment, but be
forewarned that the above cond-
itions could occur.

ARE POTATOES FATTENING ?
Are potatoes fattening? Not
at all, say home economists of
the Ontario Department of Ag-
riculture and Food, unless they
are French fried or covered with
butter, or sour cream and crumb-
led bacon. One medium baked
or boiled potato without butter
contains 100 calories. This is
the same number of calories as
in half a cup of cooked white
rice, and only about one-third
the number of calories as in an
average piece of apple pie.
As an added bonus, potatoes
are an important, inexpensive
source of vitamin C. A medium
potato supplies nearly half our
daily requirement of vitamin C,
plus B vitamins and minerals
especially iron
