50 Years Ago
About a year ago Mr. Moses
Geiger returned from the Canad-
ian West and brought with him one
potato from the Wee Magregor
variety. He planted the potato
this spring and recently dug 35
pounds of spuds from one potato
plant.
The anniversary services of the
Evangelical Church were held on
Sunday, with Bishop S. P, Spring
conducting both the evening and
morning service.
Quite a number from this vic-
inity attended the Goderich Fair
last week.
Mrs. Catherine Hauch, 77 years
old, the widow of a minister, and
mother of two ministers, a doctor,
a college professor, a public
school principal and two school
teachers, died at her daughter's
home in Chicago. The late Rev.
and Mrs. Hauch spent a pastoral
term in Zurich during the years
1888-1891.
Mr. Alvin Surerus left for Oak-
ville on Tuesday morning where
he will teach language at a large
college.

Mr. Jacob Deichert, Mrs. H.
Yungblut and daughter Miss Inez
attended the New Hamburg Fall
Fair over the weekend and visited
with friends in that section.
• Mr. William Reith, baker, is
making progress along the line
of converting the Merrier block,
which he recently purchased, into
a modern bake shop, and expects
to be moved over by the time the
cold weather is here.
Josiah, Oliver, Albert and
Wesley Surerus, of Hay Township,
recently had a most pleasant trip
up in the Parry Sound district,
with fishing and other outing sports
They made the trip by motor, and
saw some of the wilds of New Ont-
ario, and enjoyed it very much.
George Brock is again suffering
from foot trouble caused by stand-
ing on them so much in his black-
smith shop, and has to lay off for
a short time to give them rest, but
his business is being carried on by
secured help.

Pte. Keith Rose who is in the
armed forces at London spent the
weekend at his home here.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Yungblut and
son Jack, and Miss Inez Yungblut
spent a day at London last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Leroy O'Brien
and sons motored to Stratford.
Mrs. William Hoffman accomp-
anied them home after visiting
at the home of her sons at Galt
and her sister at Stratford.
Mr. Ward Fritz accompanied
by Mr. Gordon Turnbull, of Grand
Bend, enjoyed a fishing trip in
the Parry Sound district.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Edighoffer
and son Grant have returned from
Grand Bend to their home in Zur-
ich for a few weeks before leaving
for Brantford, where they intend
to spend their winter months.
Miss Pauline *Jttley has accept-
ed a position as saleslady in Gas-
cho's General Store.
Mr. and Mrs. David Gingerich
were visitors with friends at Sea -
forth.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kane, of
Montreal, were weekend visitors
with relatives here in Zurich.
Miss Arlene Haberer left for
London where she will attend

pen, left on Monday to visit her
daughter and son-in-law, Mr.
and Mrs. Edgar Schnell in Cam -
rose, Alberta.

At the age of 90, Zurich's
most prominent sportsman, Will-
iam O'Brien, had the privilege
of rolling the first ball down the
new lanes at the Zurich Bowling
Lanes, last Friday night with the
opening ceremonies following
immediately.
Mr. and Mrs. George Blake
and daughter, Roxie, of Seaforth,
visited with Mr. and Mrs. Chris
Haist last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Orland Gerber
and family, of Baden, were
Sunday visitors at the home of
his parents, Mr. and lvlrs. Moses
Gerber.
Mrs. Tom Meyers has returned
home after spending ten days
visiting with members of her
family in Oshawa and Streetsville.

of Trenton, spent the weekend
with their parents, Mr. and Mrs.
