CABINET MINISTER PRESENT - An unexpected visitor to the Bean Festival in Zurich on Saturday was the Hon. William A. Stewart, Minister of Agriculture for the Province of Ontario. Mr. Stewart is seen here as he purchases his coffee from Lois Doerr, Cathy Hamather and Debbie O'Brien. Zurich Girl Named Bean Queen A Zurich girl, Miss Dianne Zehr, was chosen as Bean Queen on Friday night at a special cer- emony which served as a kick-off for the fifth annual festival. She was picked by a panel of four judges over nine other contestants, Picked as runners-up in the contest were Miss Patti Neeb and Miss Joan Finkbeiner, both of Zurich. Other contestants were Miss Cathy Munn, Miss Janet Webb, Miss Wendy Hay, Miss Marlene Oesch, Miss Leslie Hogg, Miss Sally Dietrich, and Miss Nancy Miller. An added attraction at the cont- est was the presence of Miss Patti Kunisch, of Sebewaing, Michigan. who was the 1969 Michigan Bean Queen, Her parents. Mr, and Mrs, Carl Kunisch, along with Misses Barbara and Anne Kane, of Cal- ifornia, served as the panel of judges in the competition, Miss Zehr was crowned by Miss Donna Schilbe, who last year won the Bean Queen title in Zurich, Chairman of the committee, Douglas Armstrong, presented her with a bouquet of roses, and Miss Kunisch presented the prize money to all the contestants. Herb Turk- heim was master of ceremonies for the contest. WORLD CHAMPIONS An interesting bit of national news on. the weekend should also prove of interest to many resid- ents of this area who attended the Band Tattoo in Zurich this past summer. A feature attraction at the tat- too was the Midlanders Drum .and Bugle Corps, and just this past week the same band won the world's championship in junior B competition. They were given a royal reception on their return to London and Woodstock. About 15 members of the Strat- ford unit of the National Campers and liikers Association attended the Bean Festival in Zurich on Saturday, and made the event a two-day camp -out. The camp- ers were set up in the Zurich Community Park, and according to a spokesman for the group they were quite pleased with their vis- it. Several members of the group told this newspaper that they hoped to return to the festival again next year, and they added that possibly as many as 200 units would attend, which could ac- count for an extra eight or nine hundred people. A noticeable feature of the calmpers was the tidy manner in which they left the park. The group not only left the area they used in spotless condition, but they cleaned up the entire park as well, They will be most hear- tily welcomed back to the comm- unity again next year. 10 CENTS PER COPY Green Acres Farm Popular Attraction at Bean Festival it might seem hard to believe, 1 but each year the crowd gets larg-1 er and larger ar the Bean Festival in Zurich. On Saturday a crowd estimated at well over 10, 000 persons visited the village for the fifth annual event, and they all seemed to enjoy themselves im- mensely, Probably one of the highlights of this year's festival was the Green Acres farm. where visitors were taken by bus and then trans- ported around the site on tractor - drawn wagons. At the farm they also say many of the stars of the popular television program being portrayed by, residents of this com- munity. They also had the priv- ilege of visiting Sant 1)ruckers store, and to chat with Oliver and Lisa, I laney, Mr. Ziffle and Mr, Kimball, On numerous oc- casions they could also see Oliver and Lisa climb the pole to answer the telephone, just the way they do on the actual television show. Officials of tate festival estim- ated that well over 1000 persons visited the Green Acres farm, which is owned by Kenneth Cas- cho, Visitors starred arriving in the village before noon, and the crowd kept getting bigger as the day went on. Food committee chairman, Gerald Gingerich said he thought the people started eating earlier in tite clay than they had at previous festivals. Cold ham, cote slaw and bread were served with the delicious home -baked beans for only one dollar. The people also had the privilege to buy a pieceof tasty 'home -baked pie to go with their meal, The beans were first cooked in two large bean cookers, which were manufactured locally and engineered by Gerald Gingerich. After cooking, the beans had all the necessary ingredients ad- ded and were then baked in ovens located in the central kitchen at Gingerich's store, A considerable amount of bacon, ketchup and brown sugar were used in the recipe for cooking. There were about 50 women involved in the cooking and serv- ing of the meal, The first prepar- ation of rhe beans began already on Friday afternoon, and workers spent most of the night on the job. Meals were eaten on three differ- ent streets, Victoria, Mill and Goshen, at picnic tables . Members of women's groups of St. Boniface Church, Zurich; St. Peter's Church, St. Joseph, Zurich Mennonite Church and the Em- manuel United Church, Zurich, sold home-made pies throughout the day, and each group reported (continued on page 10) NO MAIL STRIKE For the first time in about six or seven weeks, there has not been a mail strike affecting this area during the early part of the week. In past weeks, it seemed every Monday, Tuesday, or Wed- nesday saw the area without reg- ular mail service. BEAN QUEEN - Miss Dianne Zehr, of Zurich, was chosen as the 1970 Bean Queen over nine other contestants on Friday night. The attractive 18 -year old is a daughter of Mrs. L. Zehr, and has been invited to visit the annual Michigan Bean Festival being held in Fairgrove, Michigan, on September 5, 6, and 7.
