Cochrane, director of educat- ion told members of Huron County Board of Education Mon- day evening in Clinton. He said the average size of the element- ary schools in Huron is slightly below average in the province but that the class size here tends to the high side at an average of 29.6 pupils per teaching area. "This trend should be watered closely," advised Cochrane. As well, the average number of pupils per teacher tends'to be high but may level off this year with the addition of remedial teachers in several schools. Hur- on County is "light" in the per- centage of pupils receiving spec- ial education . At the secondary level, noted Cochrane, it appears evident that as many pupils are not re- maining for Grade 13 as might be expected. A further study in this area is indicated, Cochrane said. "At 19.0 the average number of pupils per teaching area ind- icates ample accommodation in our secondary schools, " Cochrane went on. "At 17.6, the number of pupils per teacher tends to the high side, Provincial trends should be re-examined before the 1971 hiring season opens." "Generally, I feel that the Huron County School System is in a satisfactory position on any of the comparison charts used in this report, " Mr. Cochrane concl- uded. Tames Coulter, superintendent of educatiorl, presented a report about a seminar for school ad- ministrators he had attended at McArthur College earlier this month. He told the board of 20 new methods being tried in schools throughout the province, includ- ing such things as individual stud- ent timetables, credit system, development of the House System, change in attendance procedures, sernestering, use of paraprofes- sionals, etc. 1 -Ie indicated all these things were the principal's choice.
