Warn Cottagers On
Propane Frigs
Users of propane gas-fired
refrigerators were warned by
Labour Minister Dalton Bales
this week that the units must be
regularly cleaned and maintained
to avoid deadly carbon monoxide
poisoning.
He said five people have died
in the past two months as a re-
sult of carbon monoxide fumes
believed to have been caused
by blocked flues from propane
gas-fired refrigerators.
Mr. Bales said that these ref-
rigerators, used extensively' in
summer cottages, campers and
mobile homes, must be properly
cleaned and maintained at least
once a year. Otherwise, he said
there was a chance that people
might become victims of carbon
monoxide poisoning.
He said the Department of
Labour through its Energy Branch,
transferred to his department from
the Department of Energy and
Resources earlier this month, will
supply information on servicing
of these refrigerators,

Sow Perennial
Seeds Now
Many perennial flowers can be
started from seed in August and
will be ready to flower the fol-
lowing year. According to hort-
iculturists with the Ontario Dep-
artment of Agriculture and Food,
perennial flower seeds can be
sown in flats or cold frames or in
beds in the garden.
The soil should be well prepar-
ed as many of the seeds are quite
small, The addition of sand and
peat to a clay soil or of peat to
a sandy soil will be beneficial.
The soil should be well raked and
worked up to provide a good seed-
bed. About 2 ounces of super-
phosphate fertilizer per bushel of
mixture will increase plant growth
The seeds should be sown is
rows and lightly covered with soil.
The depth of sowing will vary but
a good rule of thumb is to cover
the seed to twice its thickness
with soil. •
When the seedlings are large
enough to handle they should be
transplanted to other flats or beds
so that they have sufficient room
to develop satisfactorily. They
can be overwintered in beds prov-
ided good protection is available,
or they may be overwintered in
cold frames covered with wood.
The following spring, these
plants can be set in the perennial
border.

Prepare Soil
Now for Lawns
Right now, is the best time to
prepare the lawn area for fall
seeding, •according to horticult-
urists with the Ontario Department
of Agriculture and Food. This
will allow sufficient time for in-
itial preparation which, if well
done, will reduce the work and
cost of maintenance,
The lawn area should be coverer
with topsoil to a depth of 5 or 6
inches. If the topsoil has been
removed during construction it
must be replaced, If the soil is
heavy it can be made more pli-
able by the addition of organic
matter such as manure, leafinold,
compost or peat.
. Late summer or early fall is
the safest time to start the new
lawn. By then the hottest and
driest part of the summer has
passed -and most weeds have stop-
ped growing.

care may be taken to eliminate
further sperad of the disease.
Rabies is a virus disease which
affects the central nervous system
of animals and humans. The sym-
ptoms produced by the disease vary
from incident to incident, but,
by and large, all animals behave
in a peculiar manner and attempt
to attack other animals and thus
propagate the disease, as live
virus is frequently found in the
saliva of infected animals, The
disease is usually fatal if proper

avasive action is not taken prior
to the beginning of symptoms of
the disease,
It would appear that rabies
will continue to pose a potential
hazard to dogs and cats in Huron
County. In order to alleviate, at
least in part, this hazard it has
been decided that the Canada
Department of Agriculture, Health
of Animals Branch, in co-operat-
ion with the Huron County Health
Unit, will again conduct free
anti -rabies vaccination clinics
for dogs and cats in this county.
The clinics will commence on
August 24 in the northern area,
and end on September 16 in the
southern area.
