Check Ventilation
Fans In All
Poultry Barns
During hot summer weather
maximum air movement through
controlled -environment livestock
and poultry buildings is essential,
J. E. Brubaker, School of Engin-
eering, University of Guelph, and
R.G, Winfield, Agricultural Eng-
ineer with Ontario Hydro, suggest
that farmers inspect their ventil-
ation systems to ensure top effic-
iency,
If you have adequate fan cap-
acity but feel you are not getting
full air flow, check the blade
setting of your fans, particularly
the larger belt -driven fans. In
many cases the manufacturer sets
the blade assembly back on the
shaft so the blades will not be
damaged during shiputent..If the
blade assembly is not set out after
installation you may be getting
only a small portion of the rated
fdn capacity.
A rule of thumb for adjustment
is that ono third of the blade
depth should protrude beyond the
edge of rhe orifice for bell -mouth
and sharp -edge orifices. Caution:
In some instances the entire fan
unit or louver assembly may have
to be moved to permit the adjust-
ment of the blade assembly, other
wise the fan blades may hit the
louvers.
Inadequate fan hood area, again
particularly on large fans, will
create unnecessary bac]< pressure
and reduce fan capacity. The
outlet area should be at least
equal to the area of the fan. Any
change of air direction in the hood
should be done with long smooth
curves to minimize bacl< pressure.
Clean fan blades and clean,
freely -operating louvers also help
to insure maximum output from
ventilation fans of all sizes.
