Now is the time to protect your
taller growing plants from the
wind by staking, advise horticult-
urists with the Ontario Depart-
ment of Agriculture and Food.
Plants can be tied to the stakes
with soft string or raffia, but
should not be tied so tightly that
there is no room for stem expan-

Cohoe Invade
Lake Erie
Waters Now
New and exciting reports have
come in recently regarding the
Coho Salmon population in Lake
Erie and dedicated anglers who
have long waited for the return
to the lake of a trophy -size game
fish are already falling for the
Coho craze.
Commercial fishermen are
daily netting small catches of
salmon along the Ontario shore
of Lake Erie. There is even a
report of one 20 -pound -plus coho
taken near shore just west of Port
Stanley, a fishing village south
of London, Ontario.
Anglers have reported catches
from the upper Niagara River to
Port Stanley and several have
come from the mouth of Young's
Creek in Norfolk County. These
angler -caught cohos have ranged
in size from one -and -a -half
pounds to seven pounds. And
they don't stop growing there.
Perhaps the most exciting news
comes from a Port Burwell corn-
mercial fisherman who reportedly
saw a school of hundreds of sal -

mon rising and flipping out of the
water to eat insects on the surface,
These fish were seen about 15 miler
4outh into the lake between Port
Burwell and Port Stanley. With
today's improved sports -fishing
craft a 15 -mile run into the lake
is well worth the time for the
chance to hook one of these scrap-
py salmon.
Those taken by commercial
fishermen have been in the four -
to -six -pound range. There is
currently no closed season on eh -
ho in Ontario for commercial or
sport fishermen. All the fish
caught in the lake have been
planted by U.S. Authorities.
