HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1970-06-18, Page 16PAGE SIXTEEN ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 1970 Zurich Midgets Lose to Strong Clinton Entry (by Doug Turkheim) Sunday night the Zurich Midgets hardball team met a little bit harder competition and were forced to a 10-4 defeat by Clinton, Clinton took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and were held back in the second to no runs. Don Ayotte started Zurich off in the second inning with a triple, and managed to steal home be- Luc fore the inning ended, Other Zurich runs were scored by Don Ayotte with another single and Rick Regier and Leo Debus. Zurich only managed to coxae up with four more hits off Clinton's pitcher, Steve Switzer, with Pat Bedafd having two,and single hits going to Larry Hess and Gerard Charrette. Clinton defeated Zurich at bat having 15 hits and scoring on numerous errors committed by the locals. There was a good turn -out for the first home game and we are hoping that the same loyal sup- port will continue throughout the year. OFF AND AWAY - Pony races were held at Zurich this past Sunday, and attracted a large crowd of spectators as well as participants. (Photo by Duward McAdams) Heavy Action in Rec League Softball After the second week of Zur- ich Rec League softball play, last year's champions, the Barber Boys, are leading the league with two consecutive wins. Tied with one win and one loss apiece are Bluewater BP's, Charlie's Auto Sales, Farmer's Union and Gingerichs. The Leftovers have yet to record a win. Progress is being made quite rapidly on the installation of flood lights for the local softball park, The towers are presently being installed and within a couple of weeks the games will be played Monday and Wednes- day nights under the lights. The Barbers, behind the pitching of Shane McKinnon, built up a five - run lead in the first inning, and never looked back. Also adding to the hitting attack were Bob Merner, Doug O'Brien and Phil Overholt with two hits apiece, including a double and homer off the heavy bat of Overholt, and singles by Shane McKinnon, George Suplat, and Don O'Brien. Even though the Farmer's Union came out on the short end of the score they did pound out 11 hits, including two triples by Phil Laporte and Don Masse. GINGERICI-I'S DUMP LEFTOVERS In another high scoring contest, Gingerichs came up with a strong team effort at the .plate knocking out 14 hits as they recorded their first victory of the schedule. The leftovers suffered their second consecutive loss in the young season. James Ranier and Tony Bedard each slammed out a home run while Gary Gingerich and John Gascho added triples. Lloyd Lostell and Gingerich also hit doubles and singles were contrib- uted by Wayne Horner, Fred Well: Glen Gascho and Don Parsons, who had three. Tony Bedard was the winning pitcher while Gordie 1 -la hurled fr the losers. y CHARLIE'S DUMP BLUEWATER What started as a very close match at the Bluewater turned out to be a lopsided victory for Charl- ie's Auto Sales, as they exploded for seven runs in the best half of the second inning and went on to defeat the Bluewater BP's 16-5. The Lakeside crew had been lead- ing 6-1 as they took to the field in the second inning. The big gun at the plate for St. Boniface CWL Continue Plans For Baby -Sitting The June meeting of St. Bon- iface Catholic Women's League, was opened by president, Mrs. Louis Farwell, with prayer. Thirty-eight members were pres- ent. Linda Sweeney, CWL delegate to the convention held in Hotel London, gave an interesting account of her trip. It was decided to continue baby-sitting facilities during Sunday Masses, for the summer months. Participation in the bean fest- ival, as in other years, and a . large hand made quilt will be a special attraction. Father Durand spoke on the necessity of prayer to a house- wife's life, and the means of sanctity derived from this. The meeting was adjourned and lunch was served. the victors was Dave Stark, with two home runs and a single, - while homers were also pounded out by Pete Regier and Richard Turkheim, who added a double and a single as well. Other hit- ters for Charlie's were Kevin McKinnon and Ron Corriveau with triples, and Gerry Rader, Paul Corriveau, and. Gary Flax - bard with singles. Gerry Rader and Kevin McKin- non shared the pitching chores for the winners, and Kyle Harris- on and Brian Hodgins worked on the mound for the Bluewater.
