Men in Family
Take Pride
In Photos
Father's Day could be the time
to honor all the men in the fam-
ily — with gift certificates for col-
or portrait photographs to cap-
ture three generations —' Grand- ,
father, Father and Son.
Such gift certificates offer in-
teresting opportunities to pay spe-
cial tribute.
Each of the men will probably
want prints of the others' por-
traits, while the whole family will
delight in viewing all three por-
traits in a stand-up triptych frame.
If gifts are to honor more than
one Grandadand Son, a wide
selection of frames is available.
A large framed print of the
family patriarch's portrait makes
a distinctive gift and an elegant
addition to the living room or for-
mal dining room.
Plans for this special Father's
Day surprise should be made well
in advance. Consult local profes-
sional photographers about gift
certificates and appointments for
portrait sittings.
If Grandad lives in another
town, perhaps arrangements can
be made for his sitting during a
visit, or obtain the gift certificate
from a photographer in his locale.
Don't forget prints for Grand-
mother and other relatives and
friends. And a set for Dad to use
at the office.
Annual Legion Convention in Ottawa
Endorses Non -Service Memberships
The largest Royal Canadian
Legion convention on record
ended in Ottawa with a new slate'
of officers and a close mandate
to open its membership to non -
veterans.
Over 1,400 accredited delegates
voted to allow a limited number
of people without service back-
ground to join the Legion as frat-
ernal affiliate members. Many
branches have had some form of
social member. The new form of
membership provides recognition
by Dominion Command.
The convention, opened by
Governor General Roland Mich-
ener, also streamlined the nat-
ional officer structure. Instead
of three vice-presidents who nor-
mally moved up automatically
every two years, there is now one
vice-president. Future vice-pres-
idents will be drawn from the
ranks of four executive officers.
The delegates showed marked
impatience at the government's
failure to implement the Woods
Report on pension legislation.
Concern was expressed at Veter-
ans Affairs Minister Dube's state-
ment that the government White
Paper would be incorporated into
pension legislation. Veteran's
organizations have found some
items in the White Paper unaccep
table and favour the Woods Report
The Veterans Affairs Committer
is expected to bring down its re-
port soon and this is being await-
ed by the veterans' groups before
taking any further action.
Resolutions passed during the
week urged that the immigration
laws be changed to bar American
draft dodgers, that the monarchy
be maintained and that the name
of Dominion Day be retained for
July 1.
Care of Teeth
Following
Surgery Essential
After dental surgery, healing
usually takes place quickly and
without complication, but some
degree of distress may be antic-
ipated, Occasionally complic-
ations may arise which may re-
quire further treatment from ) our
dentist,
Follow these general rules
after any operation: no rinsing
or mouth wash should be used
during the first 12 hours after an
extraction. Don't touch the
wound with your fingers or tongue.
Eat soft, nutritious foods such as
soft boiled eggs, chopped meats,
custards, milk and soup. Chew
on the other side of your mouth.
Rest and avoid any excessive
activity.
Some pain is normal following
dental surgery, but the degree
varies considerably. Ordinarily
this pain can be controlled by
sedatives prescribed by your
dentist. If the pain persists you
can consult him.
Swelling may occur as a nor -

mal after-effect. Much discom-
fort and swelling can be avoided
by applying a cold compress or
ice pack to your face over the
area of operation as soon as
possible. Keep the cold pack in
place for 20 minutes; then repeat
as necessary.
Do not use dry heat (hot water
bottle). In certain cases a hot
moist compress may be recomm-
ended by your dentist. Also con-
sult him if swelling or difficulty
in opening your jaws persists
more than two days.
Bleeding for a short time is
also a part of normal healing.
If bleeding persists it should not
be neglected. Try the following:
Avoid rinsing, hot fluids and
foods. Gently wipe out your
mouth with a clean gauze pad,
being careful not to disturb the
wound. Place a roll of sterilized
gauze or cotton (about the size
of a walnut) over it and close
your teeth tightly enough to
cause steady, gentle pressure.
Maintain this pressure for about
20 minutes. Repeat a few times
if necessary. Also , keep your
head elevated even while sleep-
inIf bleeding persists, consult
your dentist. --(Canadian Dental
Association.)
