Earl Steinman and Wil - Attractive Lawns Big Asset To Every Home An attractive, well-groomed lawn is a prime asset to any home. However, a lawn can be- come unsightly if weeds gain a foothold. A safe and easy answer to the weed probleni is the use of a weed and feed fertilizer - herbicide combinations, says Dr, J.L. Eggens, horticultural Department, University of Guelph The weed and feed combina- tion has many advantages for the home owner. It is in granular fort: and can be spread easily, either by hand or with a fertilizer spread er. No pressurized sprayer is re- quired. This eliminates the dan- ger of injurious drift which might damage ornamental or bedding plants. It also can be sperad at any time during the growing season, yet is as effective as herbicides applied in a spray as long as the weeds are in activerowth. The weed and feed combina- tion serves a dual purpose since it supplies the lawn with its nutritional requirements at the same time as it controls the weeds. Almost all turf fertilizers in the ratio of 1:1:1 or 2:1:1, such as 10:5:5 or 5:5:5, can be pur- chased in this form. LSMFT pact Sale We're Over -Stocked With Compacts Let's Trade Now! But dogs can be trained to inhale through Ln - planted tubes. Being man's best friend has its liabilities. Of 97 beagles trained to inhale in a recent smoking experiment, 79 per cent of the heavy smok- ers (seven cigarettes a day) de- veloped lung cancer. ' And vir- tually all the heavy smokers showed signs of emphysema. The link between smoking and lung cancer has been ,indicated clearly for years by statistical evidence. But this is proof posi- tive. Similarly, the association between smoking and emphy- sema has been suggested for some time. The beagle experi- ment confirms a direct causual connection. People choose to smoke volun- tarily. Dogs do not. But people —more and more of them—can also choose to stop. The beagles did not have this choice. Kicking the habit is getting to be a favorite American pastime. 21 million people in this coun- try have quit smoking. And it looks as if over a million more will kick the habit this year. Christmas Seal associations across the country are waging a KICK THE HABIT campaign for the entire month of June. If you still smoke, ask for them two leaflets, ME QUIT SMOKING, WHY? and ME QUIT SMOKING, HOW: They will also have in- formation about withdrawal pro- grams and other anti-smoking activities.
