Ontario Hydro Buys Large Facilities at CFB Clinton To save costs in providing quarters for expanded operations in the Clinton area, Ontario Hydro will take over one of the major buildings at Canadian Forces Base, Clinton, which is being phased out by the Depart- ment of National Defence. The announcement was made jointly Tuesday morning by the Hon. C.S. MacNaughton, Ont- ario Treasurer and MPP for Hur- on and R.E, McKinley, MP for Huron, both of whom assisted in the negotiations. Ontario Hydro will acquire the supply building, effective July 1 of this year, for the price of $70, 000. Tenders will be called shortly for converting the structure into office and service facilities. Before the announcement that CFB Clinton will be deactivated by September, 1971, Ontario Hydro had made plans to erect a new area office at a cost of close to $300, 000. At the request of parliamentary representatives, Ontario Hydro reviewed the alt- ernative of using the facilities at the Armed Forces Base. Along with the supply building, Ontario Hydro will acquire 3.44 acres of land which will be used for the storage of vehicle and other service equipment. Alternations will start early in July and the new facilities should be ready for occupancy by October 1 of this year. Clinton area office of Ontario Hydro has experienced a space shortage for some years. With the transfer of administration for some 2, 600 customers from Ex- eter to Clinton as of June 1, 1970, the existing office in Clinton will be completely inadequate. Mr. MacNaughton and Mr. McKinley stated that both hydro customers and taxpayers gener- ally should benefit from the co- operation displayed by federal and provincial authorities in employing existing public fac- ilities to maximum advantage. 0 Zurich Council Passes New Holding By-law A holding by-law, which re- stricts the use of any property in any given municipality, was passed at the regular meeting of the council of the village of Zurich last week. The by-law, when approved by the Ontario Municipal Board, will require anyone wishing to build on prop- erty, or use property for any other purpose, to obtain approval from the council before any act- ion can begin. Reason for the passing of this by-law is to restrict, to a cert- ain degree, any construction which is not agreeable to the municipality. In recent weeks several cases have arisen in Zurich where persons wished to build new hones on lots which council have been advised should be held for future streets. A lengthy meeting was held at the regular. council session with J.A. Nicklom, president of C.V. Kleinfeldt and Associates, a firm of planning consultants for (continued on page 6) Hay Township Council Lets Contracts For Several Municipal Drains The council of the Township of Hay, at their regular meeting last week, awarded two municip- al drain contracts, and heard a petition for work on another. Hodgins and Hayter, of Park- hill, were awarded the contract for the closed portion of the Smith -Rader drainage works, at a price of $2,103., while the contract for the open portion of the same drain went to C . P. Dietrich, of Dashwood, for the sum of $1650. The contract for the closed portion of the Hartman drainage works was given to Hodgins and Hayter, as well, at a price of $2457.80, while the open portion will be done by L.H. Turnbull and Sons, for the sum of $585. A petition for repairs and improvements to the Schwalm Drainage Works was received by the council, and the matter was turned over to engineer C. P. Corbett, for examination and a report. In other business at their meet- ing, council passed a resolution cancelling the Federation of Agriculture levy for this year, from the tax roll. In past years the levy amounted to one-fifth of a mill. Members of council decided to increase the rental fee for the Hay Township Hall in Zurich from five dollars per night to ten dollars. They felt the in- crease was necessary due to the many improvements which have been made to the building in recent months. The latest im- provement was the installation of an inlaid linoleum floor in. the main auditorium. Council agreed to begin a re- building program on the Bronson Line, for one mile north of the Dashwood limits. The work will be carried out under the 1970 road expenditure by-law. The rate for warble fly spray for the year 1970 was set by the council at 22 cents per head, per spCouncil approved sponsoring the cost of sending one fireman from both, the Dashwood and Zur- ich fire brigades to a one-week training school at Seaforth.
