Huron County Board of Education Will
Insist on Listing school Numbers
(by Shirley J. Keller)
Mrs. Marilyn Kunder, Sea -
forth, succeeded in her bid on
Monday evening at the regular
meeting of the Huron County
Board of Education to have all
the county school telephone
numbers listed in the directory.
"Whether the principals ap-
prove or not?" asked Bob Elliott.
"Yes, " insisted Mrs. Kunder.
The board gave consent to Mrs.
Kundex's motion.
Dan Murphy, Goderich, asked
why some school telephone
numbers had been unlisted in
the past. He learned that some
principals, especially those
working in a school where there
is no secretarial help, were kept
busy answering the telephone
when they should have been
teaching classes.
The board was also informed
of the system employed in Grey
Township where the principal
sends a letter home with the
students informing the parents
of the school's telephone num-
ber and ad-vising them of the
most convenient hours for him
to take calls.
Supporters of the motion to
have the telephone numbers of
all county schools listed concur-
red that parents should have
concern for the principal's work
schedule as well as the working
hours of the school staff. At the
same time, however, the major-
ity of the board members agreed
that the school's telephone num-
ber should be listed for the con-
venience of ratepayers and other
ringessuangiansonemegmaziiiserioaireaser
parties who may. want to contact
school officials.
Mrs. Kunder recalled an in-
stance where a Huron County
mother was concerned about her
child not arriving home for lunch
and was unable to contact the
school to find out more partic-
ulars. Mrs. Kunder added that
the mother had small children
who could not be left alone
while she went out looking for
the child.
Bob Elliott who with Donald
McDonald opposed Mrs. Kunder's
motion, said that if parents
really want to contact the school;
they should travel directly to
the school and confront the
teachers personally, particularly
if the school's telephone num-
ber is unlisted after decision by
the principal and his staff.
Gordon Moir, Wingham noted,
"We deplore lack of interest on
the part of parents. Unlisted
telephones automatically shut
them out."
