Such seed is designed to be planted in the fall, and expected to survive the winter and germinate in the early spring when favorable weather conditions prevail. The special plastic coat is brok- en by the action of frost in the ground. Robert Jenkinson of the Crops Division, Ridgetown College, reports that some of the plastic - coated seed started to germin- ate in early March. Since then, however, it has remained in the ground and has rotted. Mr. Jenkinson adds that because the ground had packed down during the winter, the wheat would have had difficulty em- erging even if it had remained in good condition. Normal spring wheat seed was planted on April 9, and has already started to sprout. Thus, says Mr. Jenkinson, even if the plastic -coated seed does emerge it will not be in advance of the wheat planted in the spring. Dr. C , S. Baldwin, Head of the Soils Division at Ridgetown, reports that about half of the plastic -coated spring wheat seed that was planted in the Tilbury area last fall has emer- ged. Dr. Baldwin feels it is poss- ible that the soil in the Tilbury area is more like the soil found in the Red River Valley area of Manitoba, where a fair degree of success has been achieved with plastic -coated spring wheat. isit Any of Our Three Stores ANI CHOOSE FROM OUR WIDE SELECTION OF APPLIANCES FURNITURE GIFTWARE Washers, Dryers, Ranges, Refrigerators, Dishwashers, etc. Tables, Chairs, Lamps, Complete Suites, etc. Toasters, Irons, Vacuums, Polishers, etc. We Will Assist You in Picking the Right Gift for Mother!
