AM, Hensall, when they observed their 100th anniversary, On Sat- urday night a Centennial Ban- quet was held in rhe Zurich Community Centre, and on Sundayevening the members attendd a service in the Ilensall United Church. Present for the Saturday night banquet, which was catered to by ladies of the Goshen United Church, was the Grand Master of Ontario, Bruce B, Foster, of Ridgetown. Mr. Foster was the guest speaker for the evening. Also attending the affair were numerous other officials of the Masonic Lodge in Ontario, as well as most members of the Hensall organization. General chairman of the cent-' ennial committee was Wor. Bro. W , J. F, Bell; general secretary, Wor. Bro. Ear`s Campbell; public relations, Mr. Bell; banquet, Bro. Anson McKinley; entertain- ment, Bro. Robert Drysdale; regalia, Wor. Bro. Ross Kercher; finance, Wor. Bro. Glenn Bell; historical, Bro. Gordon II. Hess; billeting, Bro. Rodger Venner. District Deputy Grand Master Charles D. Hay worked closely with all the various chairmen in planning the big event. The following is a summar- ized report of the history of this Lodge covering the past 100 years as prepared by Very Wor- ship Brother J.C. Cochrane. On the lath day of December, 1869, a petition, signed by William Carrick, Smithson Thompson, John McArthur, Robert Brown, Michael Zeller, William Buch- anan, John Johnston, Samuel Foster and William Luker, was presented to Grand Lodge of Canada, A.F. and A,NI., ask- ing for a warrant of Constitution or such other authority as may be competent to grant, empower- ing them to form themselves into a regular Lodge, to be held in the Village of 'Zurich in the County of Huron. The request of the petitioners was granted by the Most Worship- ful Alexander Allan Stevenson, of Montreal, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Canada, and a dispensation was issued giving them sufficient authority to initiate, pass and raise candi- dates. The first regular meeting of Zurich Lodge was held in Zurich in the Victoria Hotel on Friday, the 14th day of January, 1870, with Bro. William Carrick in the Master's Chair; Bro. Smith- son Thompson, Senior Warden; Bro John McArthur, `Junior War- den; Bro. William Buchanan, Senior Deacon; Bro. John Johnst- on, Junior Deacon; Bro. William Luker, Inner Guard, Bro. Robert Brown, Secretary, and Bro. Michael Zeiler, Treasurer. On the lith of February, 1870, at a regular meeting Nicholas Deichert and Louis Girard were the first candidates to be init- iated in Zurich Lodge. The Lodge continued to function under dispensation until July 14th, 1870, when a warrant was granted by Grand Lodge. On the 7th day of July, 1882, the Lodge. was transferred from Zurich to Hensall, where it was located in a small building on the corner of King and Brock Streets. In 1891 this building was destroyed by fire and they then secured a hall from Bro. William Hodgins in which they met from 1891 to 1898, when they moved to rooms in the Petty Block. Here they remain- ed until 1923, when they moved to their present premises. On January 22nd, 1923, this' Lodge was officially dedicated to the use of Masonry by Right Worshipful Bro. Charles E. Richardson, D. IJ. G , M . , from St. Marys, assisted by other Past Masters from neighbouring Lodges. On March 11th, 1892, the Lodge was honored by a visit from the Most Worshipful the Grand Master, John Ross Robert- son, of Toronto. The Lodge had always worked in rented rooms until 1900, when the building which is now occupied by the Lodge was purchased. The Lodge rooms were then modernized, and a large dining hall was add- ed. On January 10th, 1935, by authority of Grand Lodge, the regular meeting of the Lodge was Itanged from Monday night on or before the Full Moon, to Monday night on or after the Full Moom. In July, 1935, by authority granted by Grand Lodge the name of the Lodge was changed from Zurich to Huron Lodge No. 224. There have been four mem- bers who have been honored by being elected District Deputy Grand Master, to represent the Most Worshipful the Grand Master in South Huron District. They are; Right Worshipful I3ro. George T. McKay in 1901; Right Worshipful Bro. 1.,R. Coles in 1931; Right Worshipful I3ro. Frank Wright in 1955; and Right Worshipful. Bro. Charles Ilay in 19(39. Three unique events in the history of the Lodge occurred, when three different Wor. Mast- ers initiated their sons.
