Huron Board Discuss School Libraries
(by Shirley J. Keller)
The question of priorities
where school libraries is conc-
erned came to the fore Monday
eveninggat the regular meeting
of the Huron County Board of
Education. Although approval
wasiven for a classroom in
the Holmesville Public School
to be converted into a library
at the estimated cost of $1, 500.
several board members asked
what priority the board was put-
ting on establishing libraries in
other county elementary schools
where there were no facilities
at present.
Vice-chairman of the board
Bob Elliott, Goderich Township,
said that the library was request-
ed for Holmesville School be-
cause it was evident that a
classroom could be made avail-
able without causing any over-
crowding at the school. Ile said
the $1, 500 expenditure was for
shelving, tables and basic lib-
rary furnishings and that he
would be prepared to approve
a motion to include library
facilities at any Huron County
elementary school where sim-
ilar changes could be made as
economically.
If the inclusion of Library
facilities would entail a major
expenditure, Mr. Elliott sug-
gested, including perhaps the
construction of a new room,
then it would be an entirely
different matter.
The board also approved the
purchase of a portable classroom

Mrs. Marilyn Kunder, Seaf-
orth, asked whether the board
would give consideration to re-
lieving the over crowded cond-
itions at Colborne by transport-
ing students to Holmesville
where a classroom was available.
In Mrs. Kunder's opinion, such
a move would eliminate the neec
for any expenditure at either
school. She learned this was not
being considered at the present
time,
Mrs. J. Wallace, Goderich,
suggested that the county board
would soon have to look into
the question of boundaries, the
indication being that in future,

there is a possibility that a shift-
ing of students, would be em-
ployed to solve temporary pupil -
place problems.
It was interesting to note that
projected figures over the next
five years show that enrolment
in both schools, Holmesville
and Colborne, will drop.
Enrolment at Holmesville is
predicted to drop from the pres-
ent enrolment of 310 to 244 in
1973. At Colborne, present en-
rolment is 276 and in 1973 it is
expected to be 241.
In other business, the board
agreed to sponsor Bjarne Christ-
ensen of Central Huron Second-
ary School at the Canada Wide
Science Fair at McMaster Un-
iversity, Hamilton, next month;
to advise the Department of
Municipal Affairs that there is
no need for school facilities in

Half of Syrup Crop
Comes From Six
Ontario 'Counties
(By Barry Tolton, Economist

and Statistics Branch, Ontario
Department of Agriculture and
Food, Ottawa, Ontario.)
Of the nearly one million
maple trees tapped in Ontario,
half are in only six counties.
According to the 1966 Census
of Canada, the largest producers
of maple syrup are the counties
of Lanark, Leeds Parry Sound,
Waterloo, Simcoe and Fronten-
ac.
The number of trees tapped
in each of these counties ranged
from a high of 143,100 trees in
Lanark to 42, 400 trees in Front-
enac County. The 482, 000
tapped trees in these six coun-
ties are contained in 855 farms,
giving an average of about 565
trees tapped per farm. This is
more than twice the average
of 260 trees tapped per farm in
the rest of the province. Lanark
County had the highest average
number of trees at 770 per farm.
However, many producers are
tapping over 2, 000 trees.
A study conducted from 1967
to 1969 by the Farm Economics,
Co-operatives and Statistics
Branch of the Ontario Depart-
ment of Agriculture and Food
showed an average return to
labour of between 75 cents and
$1 per tree after all other ex-
penses of producing maple syr -

up have been met. This would
give the average producer in
these counties with 565 trees a
return to labor of about $500
per year from the production of
maple syrup. He would probably
produce about 150 gallons of
syrup with a cost, not including
labor, of about $3.40 per gal-
lon which he would sell at a
price of roughly $6.60.
Since there are about 2, 500
maple syrup producers in Ont-
ario, the production of maple
syrup in these six counties and
in other areas of the province
makes a significant contribution
to the livelihood of many farm
families. Probably in some
cases it represents one- quarter
of the total labor income on
the farm.
