Feed accounts for over half the total cost of producing livestock and livestock products on Eastern Ontario farms today. Since it is the largest single cost item, the feeding program to be followed in supplying the required nutrients for livestock must be given serious consider- ation. The Farin Economics, Co- operatives and Statistics Branch of the Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food recently studied the production of the main livestock feed crops prod- uced in Ontario in order to det- ermine their production and storing costs as well as their feed producing ability. The Eastern Ontario results of this study, coupled with average yields for the past five years, for grain corn, silage corn, spring grains and hay showed some interesting comparisons. Hay proved to be a more ec- onomical source of roughage nutrients than corn silage. The production cost per pound of total digestible nutrients from hay was 2, 0 cents compared with 2,3 cents per pound for corn silage. On the basis of the cost of crude ptotein, that from corn'silagge cost'l61 cents per pound, almost twice the 8z cents for crude protein produced with hay. Although hay prod- uced feed nutrients more econ- omically, silage corn will produce twice as many total digestible nutrients per acre. A comparison between spring grains and grain corn shows that grain corn is the cheaper source of total digestible nut- rients at 2.4 cents per pound and it supplies 2 to 3 times more nutrients per acre than the spring grains. The cost of the total digestible nutrients from barley is less than that from oats, 2.9 cents compared to 3.5 cents per pound. Ilow- ever, the spring grains are the cheaper source of crude protein, 17.2 cents per pound for barley and 20.4 cents for oats, comp- ared to 21.6 cents per pound for grain corn. The production of feed on Eastern Ontario farms from sil- age corn and grain corn, al- though they are not always the cheapest sources of homegrown feed, enables the farmer to produce more livestock and livestock products on his farm without having to purchase more land. Therefore, depending on the goals and needs of each in- dividual farm unit the decision must be made on whether to produce the most economical feed or to grow feed crops which will give the greatest possible feed production.
