Bulletin Available
On Labor Standards
An information bulletin ex-
plaining the minimum require-
ments that an employer must
provide to his employees is be-
ing distributed to 140, 000 em-
ployers throughout the province.
M.E. Howard, Director of
Employment Standards Branch
of the Ontario Department of
Labour, said the bulletin was
prepared to supply information
to the employers on the Employ-
ment Standards Act. He said he
hoped that it would answer many
questions posed by employers
and employees about the Act.
The bulletin provides general
information on: hours of work,
vacation with pay, equal pay
for equal work to male and fe-
male employees doing the same
work, wage protection, over-
time and premium rates of pay
and minimum wages.
Currently, approximately
3, 000 calls are received each
week by the branch from em-
ployers and employees seeking
this information.
The director said one of the
reasons for issuing the bulletin
was to acquaint employers with
the requirements of the Act. He
said many complaints investig-
ated by his inspectors are caused
by employers who are unaware
of the regulations.
Mr. Howard said that last
year the Employment Standards
Branch collected over $1, 300,
000 for 41, 000 employees from
8, 400 employers which covered
unpaid wages, overtime pay,
vacation pay, equal pay and
other areas.
