newspaper, Alfred Ducharme
has decided to retire as a cor-
respondent for the Citizens News.
Even though he is still enjoying
good health at 92 years of age,
Mr. Ducharme feels the job of
Supplying a weekly budget of
news is getting a bit too heavy
for hire. This newspaper is in-
deed gratified to him for his
many years of loyal dedication.

the Citizens News, and will
appreciate all the help possible
from residents of the St. Joseph

The first budget of news by
the two girls follows.

water Highway brought out quite
a few visitors from points in
Canada. and across the border to
help warm the cold holiday for
relatives and friends.

Three Types of
Drainage Tiles
(continued from page 12)
weight when boiled in water
for 5 hours.
Concrete drain tile specif-
ications are slightly different
from those for clay drain tile.
Standard quality concrete drain
tile must have a crushing stren-
gth of 900 pounds per lineal foot.
Extra -quality concrete drain tile
must have a crushing strength
of 1, 100 pounds per lineal foot.
A special quality concrete drain
tile is manufactured from spec-
ial cement to withstand acid or
sulphate soils.
It should also be remembered
that drain tile must not be less
than 12 inches in length and,
for sizes over 12 inches, the
length must not be less than the
diameter, says Professor Irwin.
Drain tile must be free from
cracks, checks or chips extend-
ing into the body of the tile
which would decrease the stren-
gth. They should be smooth on
the inside, be approximately
circular and straight, and have
smooth butt ends. Drain tile
should give a clear ring when
held free of the ground and
tapped with a light metal object,
Extra -quality drain tile is
usually used in deep, wide
trenches. A specification for
plastic drainage tubing has been
accepted; however, because of
the properties of the material,
the tests for this product cannot
be directly compared with those
used for clay and concrete drain
tile.
It is hoped that engineers will
now use these standards for the
specification of materials to be
used in all drainage work.
Copies of a synopsis of these
standards may be obtained from
the Ontario Farm Drainage Ass-
ociation, P.O. Box 459, Park-
hill.
