Certified Stock Recommended For
New Plantings of Strawberries
Growers should use only
Certified Stock of the Ontario
Strawberry Plant Certification
Program when they plan a new
strawberry planting, say spec-
ialists with the Ontario Depart-
ment of Agriculture and Food.
Dr. C ,L. Ricketson, Hortic-
ultural Research Institute of
Ontario, and Mr. J.V. Shannon
and Mr. G. Jackson, Farm Pro-
ducts Inspection Branch, note
that the certified plants are
produced under strict regulations
designed to control viruses,
nematodes, red steele, vertic-
illium, cyclamen mites, and
several other pests.
While strawberry plants seld-
om show signs of being diseased
vigor and yield are reduced
nevertheless by viruses. The
presence of viruses is determin-
ed by a processing called "in-
dexing". Leaflets from a plant
to be tested are grafted to spec-
ial strawberry species which are
sensitive to viruses and show
definite symptoms from any
viruses transmitted by such a
graft union. When a plant be-
comes infected, all plants
connected to it by runners are
also infected. Because there is
no cure for infected plants,
healthy ones must be used in
starting new plantings.
The Ontario Strawberry Plant
Certification Program is a
cooperative one aetween the
Canada and Ontario Departments
of Agriculture. All plantings
produced in the program are in -

Branch, Toronto, andtheHort-
icultural Research Institute of
Ontario, Vineland.
CERTIFIED STOCK FOR NEW
PLANTINGS:
An official red tag, issued
by the Institute, must be at-
tached to each package of plants
as these are the sellers guaran-
tee that the plants have been
certified.
All growers should look for
words "Ontario Certified" in
the advertising to be sure of
getting plants from the Ontario
Program. The terms "virus -free"
and "disease-free" cannot be
used in advertising Ontario
Certified Stock. The terms are
misleading because plants pro-
duced under field conditions
cannot be guaranteed free of
viruses or other pests.
Further information on all
aspects of the program can be
obtained from the Horticultural
Research Institute of Ontario,
Vineland, or the Farm Products
Inspection Branch, Ontario
Department of Agriculture and
Food, Parliament Buildings,

REPLACEMENT CALVES
NEED THE "BEST" IN
NUTRITION. THE "BEST"
COSTS LESS THAN MILK!
From the fifth day after birth to about 5
weeks of age, a replacement heifer calf will
consume about 25 pounds of the "best" in
calf nutrition ... Shur -Gain Milk Replacer,
or 250 lbs. of whole milk.
Multiply 250 lbs. of milk by your price per
pound of milk sold, subtract the cost of
Shur -Gain Milk Replacer. The result is one
good reason why Shur -Gain is the "best"—
cash savings. Another reason is the inclusion
of proper levels of antibiotics to give you
peace of mind.
Two really good reasons to specify "the best"
—Shur -Gain Milk Replacer.
