Yields per acre will be reduced.. Professor 13. J, E, Teskey, Department of Horticultural Science, Ontario Agricultural College, University of Guelph, • reports that heavy fruit thinning can be achieved by use of din- itros, NAA, Amid or Sevin, but very heavy thinningor the complete removal of al fruit from a tree, using these mater- ials, can only be achieved at the expense of some injury to leaves, shoots and s urs, p A combination ofNAA at 15 parts per million (ppm) plus one pound of Sevin, applied 10 days after petal fall, has given food results without signs of injury to the tree, says Professor Teskey. NAA at 35 ppm plus one gallon of oil has also given satisfactory results when applied 7 to 10 days after petal fall. Etltrel has stimulated abscission and may prove to be a good de - fruiting agent when applied at the 1, 000 to 1, 400 ppm rate. Professor Teskey noted that, as with fruit spraying, it is strongly recommended that the clefruiting agent be applied as a dilute spray. Ideal times for chemically defruiting young trees are in calm, dull, warns weather with high humidity, or else in the evening. Because varieties differ in their response to defruiting sprays growers are urged to use these recommendations as a general guide. Professor Teskey said growers should experiment to Finer the best materials, rates and timing for their particular conditions.
