(Citizens News Photo) Police Investigate 10 Area Accidents The Exeter detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police investi8ated the heaviest rash of accidents in some time last week, when they reported ten mishaps in their area. Four persons were injured in the 10 accidents. Eleven charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act; one under the Criminal Code of Canada and two under the Liq- uor Control Act. Twenty-one warnings were issued under the Highway Traffic Act. The accidents investigated were as follows: On Sunday, March 22, at 4.07 p. m. cars operated by Clarence C. Rau, of R.R.2, Zurich and Wayne W. Overholt of R.R.2, Zurich, collided on No. 84 highway at Frederick Street in Zurich, Rau was proceeding west on Highway 84 and Overholt was proceeding north on Frederick Street. Robert Rau, a passenger, suffer- ed a bump on the head. Dam- age was estimated at $300. Provincial Constable D.A. Lamont investigated. On Sunday, March 22, at 7:35 p.rn. a truck operated by Lorne E. Brodhagen of Stratford was proceeding south on No.6 County road around a curve and lost control on the icy road surface and rolled over on the west side of the road. John Lang of Stratford, a passenger, suf- fered a sore back and sore left leg. Damage was estimated at $75. Provincial Constable D.A, Mason investigated. On Monday, March 23 at 8:45 a.m. a car operated by Ida A. Verkuyl of R.R.6 Wood- stock, was proceeding west on County Road No. 4 and lost control in the heavy slushy snow and went out of control and into the south ditch and struck a hydro pole. Ida Verkuyl suf- fered a cut and swollen nose. Damage was estimated at $350. (continued on page 3) Huron -Perth Separate School Board Report Shows Deficit in 1969 Operation The LIuron-Perth Separate School Board at its meeting in the Board Office in Seafortlt last Monday night approved the audited financial statement for 1969 as presented by business administrator, Jack Lane, of St. Columban, The under levy (operating deficit) for 1969 amounted to $22, 839 --in assess- ment about 1.9 mills. The over- all expenditures in 1969 totalled $1, 826, 786. The statement will be sent to the Department of Education for approval. Mr. Lane reported he hopes to have the 1070 budget ready for the Board in two weeks. In other business: the Board approved a bylaw covering the conveyance of Mount Carmel convent property to Mount Car- mel Roman Catholic Parish. The board appointed trustee Michael Connolly of R.R, 3 Kippen, as Board representative to the Huron -Perth TO and RD Disease Association for 1970. The board named three trus- tees to attend the Ontario Sep- arate School Trustees' Associat- ion Annual Convention in Tor- onto on April 8, 9 and 10, Board Chairman, Keith Culliton of Stratford; James Morris of Strat- ford and Vincent Young of God- erich. Superintendent of Education, John Vintar, reported the Prof- essional Development Day held in Formosa on March 13 fr the 230 separate school teachers in Huron, Perth, Grey and Bruce Counties was most successful. Mr. Vintar spoke of a meet- ing which was held to consider the feasibility of setting up a council'for Exceptional Child- ren in Huron and Perth, with the result that it is hoped a founding meeting will be held in St. Michael's School, Strat- ford on May 6 with represent- atives from Iluron and Perth Boards of Education expected to be present too. Vice-chairman Howard Shantz of Stratford reported on a conference in Hanover which he attended on Community Use of Schools. He approved get- ting the maximum use out of schools with various programs being carried out during the evenings. The Board agreed on this use of schools in worthwhile irograms such as Boy Scout organization, elder citizens, etc. The Bylaw Committee pre- sented the Board with a set of by-laws for the Board's approval but the Board agreed to deferp adoption of the proposed bylaws until the next meeting on April 13 when twenty minutes will be devoted to discussion of them. 0 Pre-school Survey Starts next Week Iluron County Public School Grade seven and eight students will conduct a survey in the next week or ten days to deter- mine the number of pre-school children in the county who will be attending Huron County Board of Education schools. The survey is to be taken in conjunction with the school pro- gram of local community study. Students making the survey will work as individuals or in teams and will be assigned to a certain portion of a street in the town or concession in the town- ships. They will carry with them a survey sheet and parents will be requested to list the names and (continued on page '7)
