HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1970-03-05, Page 12PAGE TWELVE ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS Dominions Lose Three Straight The Zurich Dominions, after coming up with two impressive wins in the first two games of their semi-final playoff series with Belmont Sunsets, have hit another slump and lost three in a row. The sixth game of the series was scheduled for last night, Wednesday, in the Zurich arena, and if a seventh game should be necessary it wall be played in Belmont on Saturday nighty Last Thursday night in Bel- mont the locals fell on the short end of a 6-3 score, and then back in Zurich on Saturday night they blew an early 2-0 lead and lost 9-4. In Belmont on Sunday night they were the victims of a 3-1 defeat. In the other round of the semi- finals series in the western group- ing of the OHA Junior D league, the first -place Ex eter Hawks have come from behind to take a 3-1 lead over the Lucan Irish. They could wind up their series last night in Lucan. The winner will face the winner of the Bel- mont -Zurich series for the lea- gue championship. BELMONT 3 - ZURICH 1 The first period goals were Peewees Win Second Game all the Sunsets needed on Sunday night to win their third straight game over the Zurich crew. Gary gavey opened the scoring for Belmont at the 1:46 mark of the first session, while Zurich was shorthanded. With less than five minutes to go, Mike Mort- ensen scored the second goal for the Sunsets. Early in the second period, the Dominions came on strong and at the 4:41 mark Ron Cor- riveau banged in a pass from , John Loader. From that point on, however, Bob Bishop in the Belmont net became invincible, and the Zurich crew were unable to get the puck by him again. Belmont aided their third goal of the Fame in the third period, when Jam Reed beat Gary Geof- frey at the 12:25 mark. Each team were handed nine penalties in the game. BELMONT 9 - ZURICH 4 On Saturday night, the Dom- inions gave the hometown fans little to cheer about after the first period; as they blew their early two -goal lead, and allow- ed Belmont to score four goals in just over three minutes near the end of the second session. Bill Stirling opened the scoring at the 8:57 mark of the first period, and at 11:12 Ron Corri- veau made it 2-0 when he scored unassisted. Then the locals slackened and at 13:03 and 19:33 Belmont scored to tie the game at 2-2. In the second period the Dom- inions came back strong and at the 2:47 nark Aubrey Bedard shot them into the lead again when he scored from John Mc- Kinley and Bruce Schoenhals. For the next 14 minutes neither team could score, but a five- minute butt -ending penalty to John Loader at the 15:26 mark proved to be the downfall for the locals. While he was off, Bruce Schoenhals and Kevin Mc- Kinnon each picked up minor penalties, and during this time Belmont scored four goals in • three minutes and 16 seconds. Gary Gavey scored three of them and Brian Abbey one. John Wiltsie scored twice for Belmont in the third period, at the :05 second mark and again at the 10:56 mark, before Stu Mustard connected for the Dom- inions at 11:05, on a pass from Loader. Before the period ended Russ Wiltsie scored the ninth (by Doug Turkheim) On Friday mgt the Zurich Pee Wees carne back after los- ing the first game 4-0, downing Paisley 3-2. Paisley opened the scoring in the first period with Ronnie Leslie accounting for the first goal. Before the period ended Barry Hess scored on an unnas- sisted play. Neither team was able to come up with a goal in the mid- dle period. In the last stanza Ripley again took a lead with Murray Tammie scoring. At the 15:15 mark of the period Derek O'Brien came up with an unnassisted goal. With Paisley having a man in the penalty box and only 20 seconds left in the game, Derek O'Brien banged in a loose puch to score the winning marker. There were 11 penalties called with Zurich drawing six and Paisley five. goal of the game for Belmont. Six of the nine goals were scored while Zurich was short- handed, while Zurich failed to capitalize on the manpower advantage once in the entire game. At one time in the third period, Belmont had four players in the penalty box at once, and still the locals failed to beat Bishop. A total of 16 penalties were handed out in the game, with nine of them going to Belmont and seven to Zurich. BELMONT 6 - ZURICH 3 Last Thursday night in Bel- mont the Sunsets were never behind, as they scored two goals in each period, while Zurich scored only once in each. Bill Stirling scored once in both the first and third periods for the locals, while Shane Mc- Kinnon accounted for the third goal, in the second period. For Belmont Brian Abbey scor- ed twice, while Gary Gavey, Russ Wiltsie, Kevin Landon and John Wiltsie all Flashed the red light once. Of the 20 penalties called in the garne, 11 went to Belmont and nine to Zurich. 0 Hawks, Canadiens Win House League THURSDAY, MARCH 5, 1970 Zurich Bantams Win WOAA Title; Advance Into OMHA Playdowns Next (by DougTurkheim) Last Wednesayy night the Zurich Bantams won the second straight game against Ripley, shuting them out 3-0, and win- ning the W.O.A,A. champion- ship. The team will now ad- vance into the O.M.H. A. semi- final series playing either Inder- ton or Platsville. Zurich will be presented with the W .0. A . A trophy at the first home game in the next series. In the first period at the mid- way mark Dave Cyr scored the first goal on a shot from the blue line, with 13111 Bedard draw- ing the assist. Minutes later Gerald Weido banged in the sec- ond goal with Bill Bedard and Pat Bedard both drawing assists. T he last goal of the :ame was HAWKS 5 - BRUINS 2 In the first game of the House League Saturday morning the Hawks downed the Bruins 5-2. The hawks goals were scored by Fred Mommersteeg with a hat -trick and singles scored by Richard Mommerteeg and Steven Schilbe. David Schilbe and Wayne Hamather accounted for the two Bruin goals. There were nine penalties called in the game with the Hawks drawing six and the Bruins three. CANADIENS 6 - LEAFS 2 In the second House League game Saturday morning the Canadiens trounced the Leafs 6-2. The Canadiens' goals were scored by Gary Love and Wayne Clarke, with two goals each. Singles were added by Paul Robinson and Steven Bedour. Greg Love scored both goals for the Leafs on unassisted plays. in the second period with Bill Bedard capitalizing on the play set up by Gerald Weido and Pat. Bedar. Each team missed several chances in the last stanza with Zurich doing everything but putting the puck in the net. There were a total of 11 pen- alties called in the game with Ripley drawing seven and Zurich four.
