Rau 223 Treating Seed Important Part OfFarm Plans (This message brought to you as a public service, through the courtesy of Hensall District Co- operative) Untreated seed can cost you dollars through reduced yielcls of the crop and lower quality. So, good crop management mst include planning for seed treatment before planting time. Fungicide seed treatments are used to (1) kill disease producing micro-organisms that may bet on the kernes; or (2) provide pro- tection for seed and seedlings from disease micro-organisms in the soil. A combination insecticide -fungicide treatment or insecticide will protect seeds from soil -borne insects. Smuts, seed rots, seedling blights and clamping off are common cereal grain diseases you should try to control with fungicide seed treatments. Wire worm and seed corn maggots are common insects that need controlling with seed insecticides to enhance final yields. In the case of corn, commer- cial seed corn will be treated with Captan or Thiram fungicide, Be sure you treat it with an in- secticide such as b- L seed treat- ment, which is a combination of Diazinon, and Lindane. For cereal grain seed, organic mercury compounds surface borne smuts, and some seed bli- ght and seed rot diseases. Crop production programs are not successful simply because you might get a break in the weather. Fertilit), soil prepara- tion, weed -control and seed treatment are all important parts of a total program.
