READY FOR ACTION - The Zurich Lions Club oldtimers played Hensall Kinsmen oldtimers last
Saturday night in an exhibition hockey game, as part of the Hensall Winter Carnival activities.
Shown here is the coach of the Zurich team, Earl Yungblut, kneeling, right, as he gives last
minute instructions to Don O'Brien, Don Hesse, Bob McKinley, M.P., and Bill Merner. Zurich
won the game 7-4, and probably ended up with more aches and pains than their Hensall counter-
parts. (photo courtesy Exeter Times Advocate)
Three More Losses for Slumping Juniors
Last week the Zurich Domin-
ions lost three games in the
western grouping of the OIIA
Junior D league, to leave them
sitting in a precarious position
as far as playoffs are concerned.'
With only a few more games
left in the schedule they are
being pressed hard by fifth place
Lambeth Flyers, who have not
lost a game in their last five
or six starts. A combination of
either Zurich winning two more
games in their remaining sched-
ule or two lambeth losses in
their rernaing schedule could
assure the local squad of fourth
spot in the six -team division.
Two of the three remaining
games' for the Dominions will.
be played on their home ice,
if this is any consolation for
local supporters. This Sunday,
February 8, they host the scrap-
py Lucan Irish, and on the fol-
lowing Sunday, February 15,
they entertain the Belmont Sun-
sets. The final game of the
schedule sees the Dominions
playing in Exeter on Friday,
February 20.
Of the three losses suffered by
the local in the last week, two
were at the hands of the up and
corning Lambeth Flyers. Last
Wednesday night in Lambeth the
locals suffered an 8-2 setback,
and then on Sunday afternoon in
Hensall they came out on the
short end of a 4-2 score against
the sane club. Saturday night
in Belmont the Dominions were
trounced 12- 6.
LAMBETH 4 - ZURICH 2
Playing in the Hensall Arena
on Sunday afternoon as a part of
the Winter Carnival in that
community, the Dominions
came out on the short end of a
4-2 score, although the score in
no way indicated the play. Zur-
ich held a decided edge but
seemed unable to beat Bill Burn-
ett in the Lambeth net with any
degree of success.
Bob Langille, playing his best
hockey this season, shot Zurich
into an early 1-0 lead in the
first period, when he tipped in
a pass from Shane McKinnon
and Bill Taylor. Hugh Mitchell
scored two goals for Lambeth
before the session ended, to
give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
The two teams battled on
fairly even terms throughout
most of the second period, but
Zurich Squirts Win First Series in
WOAA Finals Against Adastral Park
(by Doug Turkheinr)
Last Saturday afternoon the
Zurich Squirts started off the
playoffs, as they trounced Adas-
tral Park 13- 0.
The shut -out victory was led
by Jeff O'Brien, Ricky O'Brien,
Danny Meidinger, and Grant
and Gary Love, who all assisted
each other and collected two
goals apiece. During the game
single goals carne off the sticks
of Paul. Haggitt, Ricky Bedard
and John ilaggitt.
Zurich started the scoring
early in the game and popped
in five goals in both the first
and second periods. In the
last stanza things started slowing
clown but Zurich still rifled in
three more big goals.
There were two penalties cal-
led to Zurich in the game.
WIN AGAIN
On Monday night the Zurich
Squirts won their playoff series
with Adastral Park, as they
trimmed them 5-1. They will
now advance into further con-
?etition, and need fans to help
them win.
Jeff O'Brien was the big gun
for Zurich, scoring twice on
plays from Lindsay Laport.
Ricky Bedard, Rick O'Brien and
Steven Overholt added singles
to give the team their victory.
The Adastral Park loner came
off the stick of Warren Fulton.
Zurich dominated the play
throughout the game taking a
pretty convincing 3-0 lead at
the end of the first. Adastral
Park fought back hard in the
second as neither team scored.
Zurich had made it 4-0 before
Adastral Park got on the score
sheet at the midway mark of the
period. Steven Overholt scored
the last goal with one minute
remaining in the game.
Zurich were again handed two
penalties.
Now that the play- offs have
started, all teams ask the support
of fans so that they all have a
chance at the Western Ontario
or Ontario Championship.
Remember, cheering from
the crowd always helps.
at the 14.03 mark, Lambeth
ran into trouble when two of
their players, Hugh Mitchell
and Brad Nelson, were both
sent to the dressing room with
major misconduct penalties.
This seemed to pep up the Zur-
ich crew, and one minute later
John McKinley tied the score
on a pass from Gary Kyle.
With Zurich pressing hard in
the third period, Mickey Pro-
h.ozsky got a breakaway at the
8.02 mark and beat Glenn Gas-
cho on a close- in shot to give
Lambeth a 3-2 edge. They add-
ed an insurance marker with onl'
about four minutes left to play
in the game.
A total of 27 penalties were
called in the game with 14 of
them going to Zurich. The game
was a bit on the chippy side,
with at least four major penalizes
and a double minor being hand-
ed out.
BELMONT 12 - ZURICH 6
Even though the Dominions
took a lead twice in the first
period in Belmont on Saturday
night, they carne up with one
of their poorest performances
of the season as they suffered
a 12-6 trouncing.
Ron Corriveau and Bill Stiri-
ling were top marksmen for the
locals with two goals each,
while Bob Laniille and John
McKinley earl registered once.
Corriveau shot Zurich into a
lead at the 19 second mark of
the first period, but the Sunsets
roared right back with the equal-
izer at 4.15. Stirling gave the
local crew another lead at the
14.19 mark, but two minutes
later Belmont tied the score
again. They went one goal up
with only five seconds remain-
ing in the initial stanza.
Belmont scored five more
times in the second period,
while holding Zurich to only
two goals. Again in the third
period they outscored the Dom-
inions 4-2.
With only eight minutes left
in the game, Gary Geoffrey fell
backwards on the ice as he was
attempting to get off the ice,
and over the boards in favour
of an extra attacker, when a
delayed penalty was being
called against Belmont. He was
taken to St. Joseph's Hospital,
London, for a complete .check-
up, but was later released with
no serious after-effects.
Brian Abbey and Gary Gavey
led the Belmont attack with
five and three goals respectively,

the Zurich team as he fired in

nian Dave Cyr.
Both teams got off to a slow
start as neither were able to
come up with a goal during the
first period. Midway through
the second .period, Pat Bedard

the stick of Gerald Weido, who
also assisted on one more.
In the last stanza Zurich got
