Minor Hockey Day Big Success

Last Saturday in the Zurich
Arena, in connection with
Minor Hockey Week in Canada,
there were only two Zurich team!
who proved to be a little better
than the opposing teams.
Games started at 8:30 a.m,
and ended at 10:30 p.m., with
the House League reams and all
the minor hockey teams com-
peting.
HOUSE LEAGUE
BRUINS 4 - LEAFS 3
The first game of the day saw
the Bruins down the Leafs in a
close game which ended 4-3.
Barry Hess aria Dave Clarke
each blinked the red light twice
toive the Bruins their victory.
Paul Haggitt scored twice for
the Leafs and the extra counter
was scored by Grant Love.
Jack Forrester, theoalie
for the Leafs, and Paul Haggitt
of the Bruins, were chosen as
the two stars of the game.
HAWKS 3 - CANADIENS 0
In the other house league
game the Hawks shut -out the
Canadiens, 3-0.
Richard Mommersteeg, Dan-
ny Meidinger and Fred Mom-
mersteeg paced the Hawks to
their victory.
The Hawks scored once in the
first and twice in the second
period.
Fred Mommersteeg of the
Hawks and Stephen Bedour of
the Canadiens received pucks
as stars of the game.
ZURICH REDS 3 - Z. GREENS 1
Starting the afternoon off the
Zurich Mites were divided into
two teams and the Reds register-
ed a 3-1 victory over the Greens.
Grant Love was the big gun
for the Red Team as he scored a
hat -trick.
The Green's team, one goal
was scored by Bob Mommersteeg,
Grant Love scored one goal
in each period and Bob Mom-
mersteeg scored in the second.
Bob Hay, in the nets for the
Greens, and Stephen Grainger,
of the Reds were stars of the
game.
SQUIRTS
HENSALL 4 - ZURICH 2
To start the minor teams
competing against away teams,
the Zurich Squirts were downed
by Hensall, 4-2.
Dave Kinsman led the Hen-
sall attack scoring twice in the
second period. Gary Mpir scored
the first goal of the game early
in the first period. Dwight
Consitt added another goal in
the second period.
Jeff O'Brien scored in the
opening period and Stephen
Overholt added the extra mark-
er in the secnnd period,
Stars of each game were
chosen by the coaches of the
opposing team.
Dave Kinsmen of Hensall
and Jeff O'Brien of Zurich
were stars of this game.
PEEWEES
GRAND BEND 3- ZURICH 2
The Zurich PeeWees lost a
close game to Grand Bend by
a score of 3-2,
Mike Desjardine, Cameron
Haist, and Steve Hodgins scored
once in each period to give
Grand Bend their victory.
Zurich was unable to blink
the red light until the third per-
iod when Barry Hess and Derek
O'Brien found the range, both
assisting each other's goals.
Grand Bend drew three pen-
alties while Zurich, performing
well, drew only one.
Cameron Haist of Grand Bend
and Greg Love of Zurich were
chosen as stars of the game.
BANTAMS
ZURICH 5 - EXETER 5
The Bantams proved to be the
only team not to lose in the
afternoon play, as they fought
to a 5-5 tie with Exeter.
Gerald Weido led the Zurich
attack as he accounted for a
hat -trick. Dave Cyr and Pete
Hesse each added another goal.
Perry Stover paced the Exeter
scoring with a hat -trick, Singles
were added by Wayne Regier
and Jim Wuerth. •
Each team scored one goal in
the first, as Zurich went ahead
in the second period and out-
scored Exeter 4-2.
Midway through the last per-
iod, Exeter scored two quick
goals to tie the game.
The two stars were Gerald
Weido and Perry Stover who
each had scored a hat -trick
and played an outstanding game.
MIDGETS
ADASTRAL PARK 5- ZUIRCH 4
In the last ofternoon game
the Zurich Midgets were edged
out of a win, as they were de-
feated 5-4.
Bob Langlois and Terry Sinker
led the Adastral Park attack
scoring two goals each. The
extra marker was added by Jim
Barktow.
Gerald O'Rourke led the Zur-
ich attack as he scored once and
added three assists. Other single
goals were added by Dave Cyr,
Gerald Weido and John Corriv-
eau.
Before the first period was
over Adastral Park had a 2-0
lead. In the second Zurich
scored the only goal. Early
in the last stanza, Zurich took
a 3-2 lead, which was short-
lived as Adastral Park came
back 'and scored twice, Zurich
added one more before the
game was over.
Brad Mullock of Adastral Park
and Kyle Harrison, of Zurich
were chosen as stars of the game.
MITES
ZURICH 3 - HENSALL 0
Saturday night the Mites
registered the first victory of
the day, as they shut -out Hen-
sall 3- 0.
Grant Love was the big gun for
Zurich as he scored two of Zur-
ich's goals within one minute in
the last stanza, and assisted on
a $oal scored by Karry Bedard
midway through the period.
There was one penalty called
to Zurich in the game.
Ed Elliott of Hensall, and
Grant Love, of Zurich were
picked as the two stars of the
game,
JUVENILES
ZURICH 8 - LUCKNOW 4
In the last Baine of the long
day, the Zurich Juveniles down-
ed Lucknow, 8-4.
John McKinley led the Zurich
attack as he accounted for four
of his team's eight goals. Singles
were added by Fred Armstrong,
Ron Corriveau, Don Desjardine
and John Corriveau, who scored
on a break -away.
Dave McKinnon and John
Emberlin each scored twice for
Lucknow.
Zurich outscored Lucknow
2-1 in the first period and in-
creased their lead to 6-3 before
the second period had ended.
Zurich out -scored Lucknow 2-1
again in the last stanza.
John Emberlin of Lucknow
and John McKinley of Zurich
were chosen as stars of the game.
Although both teams stuck to
playing hockey, there were a
total or ten penalties called,
seven going to Zurich and three
to Lucknow.
Zurich Flyers Trounce Dashwood 8-3;
Host Ripley Here on Tuesday Night
The Zurich Flyers, of the
WOAA Intermediate hockey •
series, continued their mastery
over the Dashwood Bears when
they came up with an easy 8-3
win over their arch -rivals last
Friday night. The Flyers had
little trouble as they dominated
the play from beginning to the
end.
Next home garne for the
Flyers is this coming Tuesday
night, when they play host to
the Ripley Cornets. Game time
will be 8 p. m.
Bill Chipchase, with three
goals, and l Ken Smale, with two,
led the Zurich onslaught over
the Dashwood crew. George
Suplat, Bob Carlile and Bob
Merrier each scored one.
Bob Hoffman opened the
scoring for Dashwood in the first
period, when he rifled a pass
from Gord Vincent past Rick
Hornets Win

Last Thursday night the Zur-
ich Hornets skated to an easy
13-5 victory over the Bluewater
Team.
Paul Corriveau led the Zurich
attack as he registered four
goals. Hat -tricks went to Gord
Hay and Jim Bedard. Isidore
Laporte added to the score as
he scored twice. The single
marker was added by Phil La-
porte.
The Bluewater goals were
singles scored by Leo Ducharme,
Jim Grainger, Larry Denomme,
Dave Durand and Don Geiger.
Bluewater out -scored Zurich
3-2 in the first period, but
before period two ended, the
Hornets had a slight 5-4 edge.
In the last stanza Zurich came
alive as they fired in eight more
goals to Bluewater's one. The
last goal of the game carne
when Gord Hay was awarded a
penalty shot.
BANTAMS WIN
Atter the game being for-
feited to them, the Zurich
Bantams gave Hensall their
power line of Gerald Weido,
Pat and Bill Bedard, and the
Zurich team actually lost the
game 7-3. (Quite a number
of the Hensall team were ab-
sent due to flu).
The Hensall goals were scor-
ed by Gerald Weido, with five
in the last stanza alone, Bill
Bedard scored one goal in the
first and second stanzas.
John Mommersteeg scored the
Ione goal of the first period for
the Zurich team, Joe Kenda
scored in the second and Bill
Webster in the third.
Jeffrey, in the Zurich net. Be-
fore the period ended, however,
Smale and Suplat had each
scored once.
Smale, Merner and Chipchase
scored in that order for the Fly-
ers in the second period, before
Gord Vincent finally found the
range for Dashwood with only
about two minutes left to play.
Chipchase took over again in
the third period, and scored two
more goals, followed by Carlile,
before Larry Lovie scored the
final Dashwood marker, at 17.50
of the last session.
In the penalty section of the
ggame, the Flyers came out on
the short end of things as they
were assessed six minors, com-
pared to five called against the
Dashwood crew.
On Friday night the Flyers
travel to Ripley fora game in
the northern community, and
then on Monday they journey
to Brussels, prior to their home
game on Tuesday night in the
local arena.
