Dominions Lose Two Big Games
The Zurich Dominions lost a
pair of crucial games in the
western grouping of the OFIA
Junior D league last week, as
they fell prey to the powerful
Exeter Hawks an two occasions.
Friday night they were beaten
5-2 in Exeter and then on Sun-
day afternoon they lost a heart-
breaker, 4-3 with only three
seconds remaining in the game.
Last night the Dominions
played in Lucan in another cru-
cial contest, and this Sunday
they play host to the Mitchell
Hawks in the local arena.
EXETER 4 - ZURICH 3
After corning from behind a
2-0 deficit on Sunday afternoon,
the Dominions saw Ron Janke
score on a braakaway with only
three seconds left to play, to
give the Exeter Hawks a lucky
4-3 victory. Zurich outplayed
and out -shot the Exeter squad
throughout the entire game,
but it seemed the breaks were
not coming their way.
Rick Schell scored the only
goal of the first period for Ex-
eter at the 5.25 mark, and this
lead held up until the 18.09
marl< in the second period, when
John Braid managed to beat
Gary Geoffrey on a screened
shot. With less than a minute
left to play in the second, and
four Exeter players in the penalty
box, Stu Mustard rifled in a pass
from John Loader and Bruce
Schoenhals on a power play.
A fired -up team of Dominions
came out flying in the third
period and after only 21 seconds
had been played John Loader
knotted the score at 2-2, when
he rifled in Bill Stirling's pass.
Less than two minutes later Mike
Hoy shot Exeter into a tempor-
ary 3-2 lead when he banged in
a pass from Larry Laye and Bob
Rowe. Their lead was short-liv-
ed, however, as Stu Mustard
uncorked a terrific back -hand
drive into the net at the 3.23
mark to tie the game at 3-3.
Both teams tried desperately
to break the tie in the next 15
or 16 minutes, and Zurich held
an edge on the play, but were
foiled -on every attempt by the
stellar netminding of John Hay-
ter in the Exeter net, With a
one-man advantage in the dying
minutes of the game, the Dom-
inions held the play in the
Exeter end continually, but just
couldn't beat Hayter. Then
the death blow came with only
three seconds left to play, as
Ron Janke picked up a loose
puck near centre ice and raced
in on the Zurich net, to score
the winning goal. Ron Corriveau
made a desperate attempt to
catch him, but just fell inches
short of his objective.
Both teams suffered heavily
in the penalty end of the game,
as they picked up 14 each. The
Exeter total included a major
and a misconduct.
The largest crowd of the sea-
son, well over 700, attended
the hard-fought game between
the two rivals.
EXE TER 5 - ZURICH 2
Four unanswered goals in the
second period was all the Exeter
Hawks needed on Friday night
on their home ice, to give them
a convincing 5-2 win. Neither
team managed to score in a
well -played, hard skating first
period.
Larry Laye with two, Ron
Lindenfield and Bob Rowe with
one each, accounted for the
Exeter scoring in their big
second period rally.
In the third session the Zurich
crew came on strong, and scor-
ed two big goals to throw a real
scare into the Exeter crew, be-
fore they finally added an in-
surance marker with one minute
left to play. John Loader sunk
home aass from Bill Stirling
for the first goal, and Shane
McKinnon flipped in John McKin
ley's pass for the other.
As in the Sunday game, John
Hayter in the Exeter net, foiled
the Zurich scoring attack on
many occasions.
A total of 24 penalties were
handed out in the game, with
16 of them being called against
Zurich by two referees wlio
were referred to as homers by
most Zurich fans. Included in
the Zurich total were a major
misconduct and a ten-minute
misconduct penalty.
A hectic battle for second,
third and fourth positions in the
western grouping of the OHA
Junior D league is currently
under way, with Lucan, Zurich
and Belmont all fighting des-
perately for second spot.
As of Monday evening, Exeter
was still solidly located -in first
place in the six -team grouping,
while Lucan has taken over
second spot from the Zurich
Dominions, who are two points
behind the Irish. Belmont is
currently in fourth place, only
one point behind the Dominions.
Both Mitchell and Lambeth
are well behind the top four,
and would seem to need a mir-
acle to make the playoffs.
Lucan has played one game
more than both Zurich and Bel -
