Obituary
MARY E. LAUGI-ITON
Mary Elizabeth Laughton
(nee Iza McDonald) passed
away in Victoria Hospital, Lon-
don, last week, and was buried
in Exeter cemetery at a private
family funeral, with an old
family friend officiating, Rev.
Ilarold Snell.
Her late husband, George V.
Laughton, originally of Parkhill,
predeceased her in June, 1966.
Mrs. Laughton was born in
Forest, Ontario at the residence
of her grandfather, Dr. James
Mutton of that town, and one •of
its original Doctors.
She was raised in Hensall,
where she lived with her father,
C , A , McDonell, the predeces-
sor of Bonthron and Drysdale who
later became one of the first
automobile dealers in Western
Ontario. Her mother was Dr.
Mary Jane McDonell, one of
Canada's first women medical
practitioners graduating from
Trinity College in Toronto at
the age of 20 years.
The family home was pur-
chased by Dr. J.C. Goddard on
the death of Dr. McDonell in
1946.
Mrs. Laughton attended public
school in Hensall and graduated
from Exeter High School and
during World War I was a Phy-
siotherapist with the RCAMC
serving in Military Hospitals
across Canada.
• Upon her marriage Mrs. Laugh-
ton resided in Toronto up until
approximately six years ago,
when her husband retires as Dir-
ector of Circulation of McLean
Hunter Publishing Company,
and then moved back to Western
Ontario, taking up residence in
London, Ontario.
During her post- war period
and right up to her death she
was active with Canadian Red
Cross as a volunteer nurse with
the Well Baby Clinic in Toronto,
the Navy League and many other
welfare projects, and at the time
of her death she was a volunteer
Supervisor at the Red Cross Lodge
at Westminister hospital, Lon-
don.
She was a niece of the late
Dr, Browning and Judge Dickson
both of Exeter, and had close
family ties with many of Exeter's
ori inal families.
S e is survived by her two
sons, C , V , Laughton, QC, of
Exeter and Dr. Paul Laughton
of Ottawa, seven grandchildren,
and a sister, Mrs, Mildred Ta-
man of Listowel.
Petersen, and Mrs. Cornelius
VanRaay. Mrs. Syd Baker was
moderator and the audience also
took part in the discussion. Mrs,
Eben Weigand gave a reading,
"Charity Ward." Mrs. Marna
Miller sang a solo and Mrs. Mer-
vyn Tiernan and Mrs. Ken Mc-
Crae a duet.
Mrs. Howard Maier, president,
was in charge of the business.
The group will tour the new
Dashwood Industries plant in
Centralia in February. They
will canvass for the Red Cross
in March. Mrs. Eben Weigand's
group won the membership drive.
A short course, "Fashion Cues"
will be held April 16. Mrs. Ho-
ward Maier will attend the Of-
ficer's Conference in Guelph.
Two euchres will be sponsored
in January. Lunch and "The
Queen" brought the meeting to
a close.
